-A New Era-
The United Nations was founded in San Francisco on October 24, 1945. The idea was based upon the earlier League of Nations (which failed miserably due to lack of support). 50 Nations orignally signed on, and a security council consisting of the US, China, USSR, UK, and France was formed. It was formed to prevent the type of bloodshed seen in World War 2 by allowing the participating nations to work out their differences diplomatically.
The UN was a great success in the early to mid 20th century spearheading world health programs, and economic stabilization. The orinization also used combined military intervention to protect human rights and establish democratic governments. The UN was also a major stage on which the Cold War was played out. The US and USSR fought many great diplomatic battles, including one which nearly brought the world to a thermonuclear war(see "Cuban Missle Crisis"). The UN was succesful in helping unite the world, and demolishing the barriers that seperated many human nations. Unfortunately, this would not last forever.
-What Goes Up Must Come Down-
In the early 1990's, after the Cold War ended, the UN began to fall apart. The primary member nation, a megapower, the United States of America began to have doubts in the UN's ability to maintain any order in an increasingly chaotic world. Though maintaining a good relationship through the Gulf War, the Conflict in Somalia, and the Kosovo situation, the US and UN seemed to go through schism, and were slowly falling apart.
Then it happened. On September 11, 2001 a major terrorist attack occured in Washington DC and New York City on the North American Continent. Hijackers rammed 2 Commercial passenger airplanes into the 2 great towers that once stood in Manhattan Island (see World Trade Center - 1970) and into the Pentagon, the defense command center of the United States of America. The United States demanded vengeance and would seek it out alone if it had to. Starting with Afghanistan, then Iraq, then North Korea and Iran, the US toppled the dictatorships that stood for terror and tyranny and completely left the UN out to dry.
-Necessity-
The UN lost much of its influence in the early 21st Century, and continued to lose support. Following many scandal's and humiliating failures, the UN was impotent and ineffective. Advances in technology and medicine modernized the third world and the population of the earth skyrocketed. within 100 years, the population grew to 37.3 billion. Africa, South America, and Australia were fully developed. Africa, once decimated by disease, famine, and war was "colonized" by the ultramodern European and North American Consortiums. The population was a great mix, and the world was melding together not out of choice, but necessity. Soon the world became infested, and the strain of feeding and supporting such a population began to strain the governments of the world. During a global convention in New Mombasa, it was decided a unilateral effort was needed to save mankind from itself. The problem was a lack of space on Earth. The solution was space itself...
-Rebirth-
The effort needed to be multinational. The whole world needed to get together and begin exploration. This is where the UN was brought in to play. Largely forgotten and thought of as a formality, the mega-nations of the world restructured the UN as a world government with a 2 house system similar to that of the United States. It also had an executive branch concerning civilian affairs and had veto power over the UNSC, judicial branch, and a military security council. Each colony had representation as did the meganations of Earth. The CMA (Colonial Military Association) was formed to organize colonial developement, ensure proper government organization and military defense.
It was decided that the military, the UNSC, would be used to maintain order and protect the human race from outside elements.
the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) had 3 main branches: The Marines: the primary planetside force The Navy: the primary force governing all the space between planets Planetary Gaurd: Militaries established by colonies for self defense and to supplement the UNSC Navy and Marines.
all branches derived intelligence and research from the ONI, Office of Naval Intellingence (semper vigilans).
Though there were many internal conflicts, the power base of the UNSC maintained order to some degree. However, this would not last long. in 2525, first contact with the Covenent put the UNSC in absolute authority. The human race was kept in the dark of the true nature of the war. Billions died never knowing the Covenent were winning until plasma was raining upon them.
The UN suffered a rise and fall, yet remained an integral part of human history.
