*Note- Spartan-X and Robert are one and the same people.
0700 hours, September 3, 2552 (Military Calendar) Commandeered Covenant Escape Ship, Bespin System near planet Bespin
"Set a course for the Elite and Prophet home-world," Spartan-X said.
"Going after the Covenant leaders probably would be the most reasonable idea, but how are we going to do this? You are only one Spartan," the AI Katana reasoned. "I'll think of something," Robert replied. In his head he knew what impossible odds he had. He would need to remember all of his training to pull this off; but then again, he disgraced all of his training when he killed his fellow Spartan, Adam-121.
'Dammit', he thought. Katana stayed silent as Robert thought.
They were both in an escape ship that was hijacked from a now destroyed Covenant cruiser. A Warthog with crates of ammo was parked in the ship.
"Okay", Katana started. "I'm going to try out the slipstream capabilities of this ship", she said. She was locked in a moment of concentration. "Amazing", she said. "With their technology we should be able to get there within 2 hours. It's incredible. They have their own section of slip-space dedicated to the transportation to their home-planets, and they are the only ones who can use it."
"Just get us there", Spartan-X responded.
Katana began to speak again. "The entrance and exit to their section of slip-space are controlled by various portals and wormholes. There is actually one portal nearby. It is camouflaged in every way possible to the UNSC. This is one of the ways they travel so fast."
Robert stood up and walked over to the crates of ammo he piled up into the back of the parked Warthog. He looked through the weapons. He had the new issue Battle Rifle with a scope, two Submachine Guns, one Jackhammer rocket launcher and the S2-AM Sniper rifle with a custom Oracle scope.
"Linda used these," he said out loud. It had been a while since he had seen other Spartans besides his now dead squad. He continued with his searching and pawed through the last crate. It was filled with loads of ammo for his guns.
"I have enough weapons for a platoon", he muttered. He would have to choose wisely what to take with him in situations. Spartan-X walked over to the cockpit.
"Like what you found?" Katana asked.
"Yes", Robert replied. "I only wish I had a squad to help me." He sighed. "I'm gonna get some rest Katana. Wake me up if you come across anything."
She nodded but was nearly ignoring him. She didn't care about anything right now. She was soaking up tons and tons of information from the Covenant network, and she wanted more.
The Spartan sat in the chair and laid his head back. Once he fell asleep, he began to dream. The Spartan dreamt of Adam. Adam's face filled his mind. Adam was just staring at him and then a bullet hole appeared on his forehead and began to gush blood.
"Robert, Why?" Adam pleaded.
Katana's voice ended the nightmare. "Spartan-X! Wake up!"
Robert shook his head and snapped to attention. "What is it?," he asked.
"I've found out some new information on a different species the Covenant fear." Katana said.
Katana revealed pictures of the various species. They looked like zombies from the old Earth films. "They are believed to be held here". The picture of the giant ring came up again. "They call it Halo," Katana said.
"What do you mean by held?" Robert asked.
"They are trapped under ground and under heavy surveillance by the ring's "defenders", she replied. "I can't find anymore information."
Robert thought for a moment. "Is there any chance of allying?" Robert asked.
"No way", Katana said. "They aren't exactly intelligent. And all they yearn to do is infect every living thing. Their species is basically a virus. They don't have any technology at all."
Robert checked his mission clock. According to Katana's original ETA of 2 hours, they only had about twenty minutes left.
"Spartan-X." Katana yelped.
"What is it Katana?" Robert replied, "There seems to be a few other ships in slip-space with us. They are hailing us."
"Dammit", yelled Robert. He looked out of the front viewports and saw a huge type of ship he had never seen before. It had what looked like huge cannons on its sides.
"They request we identify ourselves. They know what ship we escaped from and exactly how it went down."
Robert cursed under his breath. "Do you have any type of response to give them?" the Spartan demanded.
"I'll try", Katana said. A moment passed. "They bought it! she yelled. But they are charging their weapons!"
The cannons on the sides of the ship glowed and then released a blue flash.
Robert shut his eyes and awaited death. Nothing happened. He looked out of the front view-port. A long beam was protruding from the cannon. At the end of the beam a big blinding light was forming.
Katana yelled "They have created a worm-hole!"
There were small Covenant ships and two bigger cruisers entering the worm-hole.
"My data says those are research teams." Katana said. "They must be going on some scientific expedition.
"What the hell are they going to research?" Robert said.
"Get clear of the worm-hole!" he yelled.
"I can't! It's pulling us in."
The big hole loomed closer. It was a huge tunnel filled with millions of colors, all changing.
"Where is it going to take us?" he yelled.
"I have no idea" she replied.
They were now inside of it. It was like a roller coaster. They took huge dips and sharp turns. The colors blazed through the tunnel and flashed. The whole ship rumbled violently. Robert was using all of his super-human strength just to merely brace himself.
A warning flashed up on Robert's HUD. It was his mission clock. Robert's heart sank. The mission clock's date was counting down rapidly by the hundreds.
"Katana" he beckoned.
"I know", she replied. This went on for ten minutes. Robert finally saw the light at the end.
They blasted out of the worm-hole and were now near a gas-giant and a small moon. Robert was relieved at the sight of black space again.
Robert's mission clock read September 3rd, 98,665 B.C "Oh my god", Spartan-X said.
"That worm-hole took us back approximately 101,217 years," Katana said.
"What the hell do the Covenant want to research so far back in time." Spartan-X demanded.
Katana gasped. "Look," she said.
Robert saw the small research ships flying in towards a large object between the gas giant and the moon.
"I'll be damned", Spartan-X said out loud.
It was the huge ring. It was Halo.
0900 hours, September 3, 98,665 B.C Commandeered Covenant Escape Ship, Unknown System near artificial ring Halo
Robert marveled at the beauty of the Ring. It had an Earthy landscape with oceans, lakes, and mountains.
"Why do they want to research this place?" Robert asked.
"Maybe they want to learn more about their heritage or meet these "gods" of theirs." Katana reasoned.
"Whatever they want to do, it's probably not the best for the human race." Robert mumbled. "They sucked our asses in here. I'm going to make sure the only thing they research is their body count after I'm done with them."
"Amen to that", Katana responded. She was surprised at how human her response was.
The two Covenant cruisers and the small research ships were now within the atmosphere. Each ship was heading in a different direction.
"Weird", Robert started. "Who would build such a paradise to house a virus".
Their escape ship was now entering the atmosphere. The ship rumbled as it plummeted deeper into Halo's sky.
"I can't guarantee a safe landing," Katana said.
Spartan-X just nodded. He was busy examining the landscape of the ring. The ground was now nearing closer. They were headed for some grassy plains and hills from what Robert could see. He saw small structures too, in the distance.
"Impact in five seconds", Katana yelled.
Five seconds later Robert found himself on the floor after bouncing hard into the ceiling.
"Ow," he said. His vision was blurry and his shield's alarm was going off.
"Spartan-X! Can you hear me?" Katana asked with a hint of worry in her voice.
"I'll live," He responded. "Open the back hatch".
The hatch opened, revealing the grass and trees. Spartan-X stepped out and examined the area. A huge structure loomed in the distance.
"That looks like a good place to start," he said. "Wanna come?" he asked Katana.
'I can't take all of this data with me' she thought. She had acquired so much information from the ship's computer. It would be hard to part with it. "Okay", she sighed.
Robert walked up and pulled her cube out and inserted it into his socket. He enjoyed the liquid sensation while he could and then walked over to his weapons. He examined the Warthog for any damages and then got in. Robert backed out of the Covenant ship and then accelerated towards the structure.
"Nothing like a nice morning drive", he said. The scenery was beautiful. Soon he got close enough to examine the structure. It sat on an incline and was about 40 feet high and had a kind of dome ceiling. There was a large opening in the front and a small chimney like structure on top. Spartan-X squinted to see it and it fired a large blue beam straight in the air.
"Whoa", he said.
"Strange, Katana muttered.
Robert drove up to the front of the building and hit the brakes.
"We should take a look inside", Katana said.
Robert nodded and stepped out of the LRV. He grabbed a Battle Rifle and two frag grenades. Robert walked cautiously up to the entrance as if waiting for a firefight. There was a hallway inside that was dimly lit. As Robert paced through the long hallway he found some familiar looking symbols on the wall. But this time they were holographic. The hallway lead to a large chamber. There were a couple of holopanels and large glass cages. Most of the glass was broken though.
"These holopanels are similar to the Covenant ones", Katana said.
Spartan-X wasn't really listening to her. He was investigating the greenish and yellowish blood that was splattered every where. There were also burnt fragments of metal laying around.
"There was a battle," Robert said
"No doubt," Katana said.
"Spartan-X, I'm picking up multiple contacts moving in on the structure.," Katana warned.
"Dammit."
Robert sprinted out of the room and into the hallway. He heard the whine of Ghosts. He crept up to the entrance to get a look. Robert snaked a fiber-optic probe out to get a look. There were four Ghosts all speeding towards the Warthog. All of them were piloted by Elites.
Robert sprung out and began to fire at the Ghosts with his Battle Rifle. A wounded Elite fell out of the seat of it's hovercraft and was immediately pulverized by the Ghost behind it. Robert threw a frag grenade and ran for the Warthog.
The grenade detonated and sent all three remaining Ghosts flying. Spartan-X was already in the gunner seat of his Warthog by then. He grabbed a hold of the chaingun and mowed down the Covenant survivors.
"How the hell did they find us so fast," he asked.
"They weren't looking for us," Katana replied.
"I intercepted their intercom and they were taking something called an "index" to their ship and were ambushed by the flood and lost their way."
"I thought the flood were contained," Robert said.
"I guess someone released them."
Robert jogged over to the dead Elites. He found a green device in one of the Elite's hands. It was shaped in the letter T.
"This must be the index," Robert said. He bent over to pick it up.
As soon as he had it in his grasp a small blue metallic object appeared right in front of him.
It spoke. "Hello, I am 343 Guilty-Spark."
