In the Dead of the Night 1/2 "You sure this was smart? I mean we got a small group of children on board, I don't think setting up camp so near Covenant forces is safe, sir" Jameson asked sergeant Nick Jackson, as they set up camp for the night. They had managed to evacuate a small village the day earlier, they're cargo was a group of young children between the age of four and eight. Most of them were sleeping in the cargo bay in sleeping bags. The remaining soldiers that weren't standing guard for any Covenant attacks, where either relaxing, cleaning their weaponry, trading war stories or entertaining the children that weren't sleeping. "We need to set camp, soldier. The base reported a heavy storm tonight with fog and heavy winds, now normally I wouldn't mind that but with these children aboard and the Covenant lurking about I rather have us camping in one spot then be stuck in an open field surrounded by fog and winds that will certainly will put off you're aim if we get in to battle" Jameson sighed, the serge was probably right and he knew it. But it didn't mean he had to like it. "Get the others ready, we need to make a schedule for the night watch tonight" The serge said as he left Jameson at the weaponry tent. "Hey there lil one, why ain't ya asleep?" six year old Michael, or Mikey as he was called, looked up from where he sat on the grass near the fire, he couldn't sleep because he was worried about where his parents where. His mom had said that he was to go with the nice soldier men to safety and that they would see each other again in Half Moon Canyon , where a large military base was. "I couldn't sleep, sir" was the young child's response to the soldier. The man nodded and sat down next to the young boy, laying his rifle next to him as he did. "Wanna tell me, why?" Mikey looked at the fire not knowing what to say, some part of him wanted to tell the nice soldier that he missed his mommy but another part told him to be such a baby. "I am Vincent Creed, by the way" the soldier said extending a hand. Mikey smiled putting his own smaller hand in the other man's larger one. "I'm Michael Woods, but everyone calls me Mikey" The man, Vincent nodded. "Well, Mikey what's a pup like you doing up at this time of night?" "I miss my mom and dad, sir" came the quite reply. Vincent gave the child a sympathetic look. "I know the feeling, pup. When I when we had to evacuate I lost my mom in the while we got shipped off before the Covenant came. I didn't saw for a week until we found each other again at the base they had brought us to. In that week I thought all day of her" Mikey smiled at the soldier. "You think I'll see her soon like you, sir?" He asked hopeful. Vincent nodded and ruffled the boy's blond hair. "I know you will, Pup" "Creed! Ya coming for a game of Poker?" one of the soldiers in that had walked out on of the tents called, Vincent looked up. "I'll be there in a sec, Knights!" he turned back to the six year old. "Go to sleep, pup." With that the man stood up giving the boy a smile and a wave, the man disappeared in to the tent where the other soldier had come from. Mikey sat there for five minutes when he stood up, stifling a yawn he walked back to the tent he was put in to. "Where were you?" A young girl with jet black hair and dark blue eyes asked as he entered the tent. "None of you're business" Mikey retorted as he walked to his sleeping back that lay next to hers. The girl frowned at him before she lay down again and faced him. "You shouldn't go outside, those Covies could get ya" she whispered. Mikey thrugged. "I'm not scared of them." The girl looked at him in disbelief. "You're lying." The boy stuck out his tongue. "Am not!" and with that he turned his back on her. Deciding her neighbour was a big stupid lying poo-head, Seth, as that was the young girl's name, turned around as well and closed her eyes. "I miss you daddy," she whispered as tears gathered in her eyes, but before the tears could fall she was asleep. |+| Several hours later in darkest latest hours of the night, near the time of dawn something moved in the night's darkness. A group of four Elites silently made their way towards the human camp. Keeping low they came within mere meters away form the tents. One of the four a gold armoured Elite nodded to the three blue armoured ones, understanding the signal they moved to the larger tents near the centre of the camp. The Grunts had taken care of the soldiers that stood watch earlier so the Elites could actually get in to the centre with out many problems. One of the bleu Elites revealed the dagger it had brought with it and used it to make a rip in the tents side. Grabbing a grenade like object the golden Elite pressed in a button before throwing the object in to the tent. Hearing the soft 'pop' the group of Elite's waited for a moment before heading in. The sleeping gas had done its job. The golden Elite went first inside, motioning the other three to follow him inside. Silently the four Elites stepped in to tent, their eyes adjusting to the dim light. "Children?"One of the three blue Elites asked looking at the sleeping human cubs in the tent. The golden Elite nodded. " Dakar wants human cubs for this project of his" Cy, as the blue Elite was named frowned, why would Dakar possibly need human cubs for? Not wanting to dwell on his thoughts at the moment he stepped forwards to one of the sleeping children. "How many does he need, Verthril?" Cy asked the golden Elite standing near him. Verthril gently lifted on sleeping childe as to not awake it. "One cub each of us will carry. We still need to be able to fight back if we get discovered" Copying the golden one's movements, Cy and the other two, Ace and Leiko grabbed each one child. Leading his men out of the human camp they disappeared as thieves in to the night.
