Location: Earth Time: 0600 hours
"Aren't we coming in too low." I asked. The pilot responed by saying "If we go any higher we'll be sitting ducks for those banshees." That was all I needed to hear. The CO kept going over the plan with us over and over. I memorized it word for word (I think that's what he wanted anyways).
The pilot said "One minute and we should be over the LZ." Then out of nowhere a banshee came behind us. No one saw it at first so I yelled at the the top of my lungs "Banshee at six o'clock!" By then it was too late. The banshee opened fire killing 2 of the 12 marines in the pelican. Everyone opened fire at the banshee. It went straight down. Then no one said anything. Silence, nothing but silence until the pilot said "10 seconds 'till we get to the LZ!"
We were there. We got of the pelican. That was the first time I had steped on Earth in over 3 years. That moment was shortened by covenant plasma shots hitting all around us. Rodreguies, my best friend, was the last one out of the Pelican. I pulled him dow as a jackal took a shot at his head. That's when I fired my first shot of the day. It was at a grunt. He dropped deader then stone. The CO LT Spears rallyed us up and had us charge the covenant oppostition.
We slaughtered those covenant troops. Not a single one left alive. I turned to talk to Rodreguies about what had just happened when it happened. A battalion of covenant troops came right behind us.
LT Spears yelled "Covenant troops coming from behind us! Follow me!" We all followed Lt Spears to an abanoned building that had been bombed by covenant cruisers. We went inside and found two marines with a 50cal. firing at some retreating grunts. One of them yelled "Thats for killing my family you alien scum!" That's when I realized that alot of these marines had lost their families to the covenant forces. I hadn't lost any ....... yet.
Lt Spears told the two marines about the covenant forces behind us. They listened to him. Then LT Spears said "A covenant battalion is coming from the west. We can set up an ambush if you all do your part. You two set up that 50 cal. on that building to our right. Rodreguies take Johnson and Smith and set up a defensive perimeter around this building. Civilins take the rest of the marines to the bunker in front of this building. You need to hold off the covenant long enough so that I can rig this building with explosives.
I rallyed up the marines and headed for the bunker. I knew that alot of these men would be dying today but, it would for a worthy cause. I told the marines "Carry as much ammo as you can into the bunker. Check your weapon and top of your magazines. Check your targets so you dont hit a friendly. Go for the higher ranking elites, for without them the covenant will be without leaders. And show no mercy for you will be shown none!" The marines responeded with a very loud "Hoo-rah!" LT Spears was setting up explosives in the building but I didn't know why. I had to forget about that and keep my mind on the battle ahead. There was silence across the bunker as we heared covenant troops walking across the city. Then the first shot was fired. Private Johanson fired his sniper rifle at the golden elite. He was a general. A general killed by a Private. The elite fell down and we opened fire at the unexpecting covenant troops. They took cover and fired back. Bullets and plamsa rounds filled the air. Then the 50 cal. opened up on the troops below mowing them down one by one. We were all firing but, so were the covenant. Then ten grunts did a suicide charge at the bunker throwing plasma grenades inside. They killed Private Jones but, we killed all of those grunts. Private Johanson, who was Jones' best friend, ran inton the battlefield shotting he killed at least three elites before he was shot down by a group of jackals. We were taking heavy causlaties and thats when LT Spears came into the bunker and said "All finshed let's get the hell out of here!" By then it was too late.
