From the Halo Diaries (Ch 1)
A loud thumping sound awakened Private Davoli from his 'eye resting' startled for a moment he looked at the door, the thumping sound grew louder. "What the hell?" Davoli muttered to himself as he inspected the door, this was not any door, it was the door that led to the airless space that surrounded the Athens orbiting over its name counterpart on Earth. Davoli on occasion had been requested to open this door for people to get in or out but usually he had been informed at least two hours prior. Suddenly a warning klaxon sounded and a red light strobed overhead. At first undecided Davoli realized that he would have to see what was behind the door so he drew his pistol and went to press the air lock release button but before he could an explosion sent him flying clear across the holding bay.
Stars danced in front of Davoli's eyes he shook them off and searched for his pistol, he found it lying ten feet from him. As his hand clasped the weapon a sheering pain swept his left leg, Davoli cried out but there was no one to hear him so he turned around and found himself face to face with a Covenant Elite. The Elite cocked its head as if trying to decide what to do with him and Davoli used this moment bringing the pistol up to meet the Elite head. Davoli knew it was hopeless, he knew about Elite personal shields, a simple pistol could not defeat that, he cursed the idiot who had suggested striping down the pistol so the metal could be used for bullets but something amazing happened.
He had apparently caught the Elite off guard and the Elite reacted to the weapon
by backing up. Davoli was stunned for a moment, apparently so was the Elite; it hadn't occurred to either of them that the Elite would back off. Davoli came out of his daze quicker than the Elite and so was able to act first, Davoli fired wildly above the Elite and the Elite amused that he had seemingly frightened the human so did not notice the large crate falling on top of him. Davoli trying to stand up but collapsed under his left leg, it was broken, so instead he scrambled on his knees to the exit as plasma slashed overhead.
Davoli dived through the opening leading to the conference area while plasma bolts still went overhead, Davoli slammed to control to close the door but it was too late. Elite had gotten to the door and was keeping it open for the rest of the Covenant to get through. Davoli watched on in horror as Grunts, Jackals, Elites and even a clutch of Hunters entered the conference area, Davoli heard screaming a shots ringing from there. A red coloured Elite stepped up to Davoli, he looked directly down at his pistol as it charged, then discharged.
Red Elite Dannma 'Hrusamne moved quickly through the closing doors kept open by another Elite and moved towards the fighting in the nearest room. Before he did he saw a pathetic 'human' lying injured on the floor, 'Hrusamne grunted in anger and moved towards him. The dirty human looked up at him, 'Hrusamne looked down at him drawing his pistol. He charged the pistol looking at the human as he stared at the weapon, 'Hrusamne discharged the weapon into him then moved on into the next room. It was utter chaos in this room, as 'Hrusamne looked around he saw that this room was meant for recreation, it had two levels the bottom one where his units had taken ground on top of which was the upper floor made up of gangplanks and walkways where the humans were firing down onto his units.
'Hrusamne raced across the room to where he thought the weakest point in their offence was and took up battle there blasting away with his plasma rifle and pistol. He quickly felled three humans when one sporting a large tube over his shoulder joined the fray. 'Hrusamne opened fire at this one knowing the danger the weapon could potentially cause. The human caught by surprise was hit in the chest and fell heavily onto the walkway; a passing human saw the weapon and hefted it only to be blasted by a nearby Hunter. The fight continued and steadily got worse for the humans, they were slowly pushed back to the doors on the top level, 'Hrusamne knew that the humans as dumb as they were would have locked the bottom doors preventing them from continuing into the facility so they had to get through up here while they could.
'Hrusamne made to sidestep a human so that he could get in through an open door and hopefully allow others to do the same but as he got to the door he realized his mistake. A small squad of humans wearing camouflage fatigues to match the walls of the station jumped out of the darkness and opened fire, 'Hrusamne returned fire but these humans were smarter and quicker than the normal variety soon blasting through his shields killing him.
Corporal Jenny Sampson squeezed the trigger on her battle rifle and delivered a three round burst of lead into the red Elites skull effectively killing him. She smiled to herself while she could then joined her group in the darkness; she was a Navy Spec Ops soldier, one of the few female ones too. Her group had been stationed on the Athens for a few weeks now and she was still getting to know the station, truth be told she didn't even know the station had a conference room until her group arrived but she wasn't prepared to tell them that. She was determined to prove herself not so much to the navy or herself but her lieutenant, Lieutenant Carter. Lieutenant Carter did not ride her back like the others, he did not yell at her
more than the others, he treated her like an equal and he was the only one in the Spec Ops that did. She felt bound by honor to prove herself which was why she had signed up with this team, Team Shadow were infamous for doing things the hard way and winning against huge odds, she joined this team to get some real action.
Corporal Sampson had also begun to like her teams quirks, the way Private Longatano sang 'waste all ye faithful' before combat, Corporal Arbuckle and his weird almost psychotic love of explosives, plus who could forget Sergeant Swinbs constant rants about how he single handedly taught the Spartans and how he was disappointed at how they were so inferior to him, they knew he was lying but they liked it all the same. Sampson mentally shook herself, no time for that now another poor sucker was walking in for the kill Sampson couldn't see who it was exactly but she guessed it was an Elite. Sampson was about to jump out when the thing came into perfect view and she nearly gasped but kept her breathing in check. A Hunter, huge strong and carrying a shield as thick as Longatano's skull. Sampson checked her weapon thinking back to her training on Hunters, the mid section used to be a weak point, you could hit it once with a pistol and in the right spot it would kill instantly. Now with the extra armor in the midsection it was no longer as weak but it was still a weak point none the less.
Sampson though instead of going for the hard to reach belly decided on his tender neck, she aimed and waited for the signal to move. Her com channel opened twice, the signal to go and so in unison Team Shadow a team of only four soldiers took on a battle hardened Hunter.
On nearly the other side of the station a Grunt by the name of Mayfap hobbled his way to a temporary Elite command post. He had not had any sleep since the events at the Unyielding Hierophant had transpired. Mayfap could not believe the tales told about what happened there, some said that there had been involvement from 'The Demon' but it was unclear as radio transitions at that time were being distorted by an unknown source. All Mayfap knew for sure was that he had been in charge of assisting, the assistant who helped clear up the debris. It was a tiring and boring job but somegrunt had to do it, he and his kind never got any respect from the upper classes. Mayfap calmed himself, such things even though he had only thought it were heresy and it was said that the Prophets could read minds despite distances like these.
Mayfap finally reached the command post after at least six different DNA sequence tests, this was ridiculous! How could and human possibly hope to disguise themselves as a Grunt?! Come to think of it why would any of them want to? If he were trying to infiltrate the Covenant he would pose as a high ranking official who could easily bypass such things. Mayfap looked up a the black commando Elite and threw around the idea of saying this but decided not to on the grounds that this Elite could pummel him in front of the Prophet of Truth himself and not get in trouble, Mayfap on the other hand would be charged with obstructing the Elites punches with his face.
Mayfap eventually was allowed to see the Golden Elite in charge of the invasion of this station, as he entered he realized that everything was being packed up in a hurry. "Is anything wrong?" Mayfap asked the Golden Elite, he smiled and replied "No everything is going according to plan now withdraw your troops." Mayfap was shocked "Sir, we haven't won yet why are we retreating?" Mayfap was dying to know why the Elite wanted to leave a battle early. "Just do it and you shall soon see." The Elite said his smile growing wider.
Corporal Sampson watched as Grunts and Elites stormed out from where they came from, some stayed behind to fight but they were soon killed. A massive cheer went up throughout the crew and they whooped, someone had even found alcohol to pass out. The joy was infectious and Sampson soon felt her own spirits lift but something still felt wrong, she looked at Sergeant Swinb seeing that he too looked concerned. He turned around grabbing her by the shoulder and steered her with the rest of the group to the airlock bay the Covenant had come in through. "Gear up, were going out." He said in a very grave voice. "Sarge, did we get approval from the Captain to do this?" Longatano replied. "No." Swinb said flatly. "Good, for a second there I thought that the Captain had approved of this suicide mission." Corporal Arbuckle laughed.
"This isn't a suicide mission," said Swinb dismissively "I just want to make sure is all." As they quickly suited up Sampson could hear Longatano humming quietly 'waste all ye faithful'. Once Team Shadow was in their space suits Swinb led them to the airlock telling a drunken private to release the door. "But why you wanna go out there?" the private slurred "The party's in here sir!" Swinb gave the man a once over walked slowly up to him, he then as fast as lightening grabbed his megaphone put it to the privates ear and yelled at the top of his voice "JUST OPEN THE DOORS!" The private visibly shaken from the fifty decibels he had just received went to the door controls.
The moment Team Shadow was outside Swinb had them looking for anything out of the ordinary, when none of them found anything Swinb looked even more concerned. He was about to tell them to search again when a terrible shockwave shook them all to the bone, a series of small explosions ringed throughout the hull of the Athens and she started to break up. Then a massive explosion engulfed Team Shadow and the rest of the station quickly moving across the hull.
Mayfap looked on in amazement as the station he had just left, designated the Athens by the humans, was engulfed in an explosion. The explosion sent small and large bits of metal zooming in all directions; one came particularly close to their convoy and struck the ship next to them tearing it in two. Mayfap, not wanting to be next offered the drop ship pilot, a particularly annoying Jackal his food nipple to speed the ship up. The drop ship zoomed towards their intercept ship, a frigate called the Silence and Deception; she had been stationary and waiting for them since they entered the Athens. Finally Mayfap understood what the Elite had done, making him very glad this Elite didn't see it fit to stay and die 'A hero's death'. Strictly speaking Mayfap didn't share the Elite's view of how someone should die, in fact if he had the choice he would rather die of old age
that or possibly being killed by ten jealous husband's
no make that twelve.
Mayfap smiled at his little joke; unfortunately he had done that at a very inappropriate time as he was looking at a Jackal who misconstrued this look. Before Mayfap knew what was happening the Jackal had tackled him and was punching him viciously.
Field Medic David Craig stared in horror as man he watched a man lay dying by a crate of munitions he had been keeping safe from the Covenant. Why anyone thought the Covenant were interested in human munitions was beyond him as he had seen Elites fight with their teeth rather than go for a human weapon. Craig bent onto one knee and inspected the wounds, he was critically wounded. Craig didn't have the tools necessary to perform the procedure to save his life, but he couldn't just leave the man here. Craig bit his lip in frustration, what to do?
Corporal Sampson opened her eyes, everything was fuzzy and distorted so she couldn't tell where she was. What had happened? Sampson tried to remember the events leading up to where she was now. Suiting up, going out, searching, then
Sampson tried to sit upright but just went spinning in space. "Zero gravity, right." Sampson muttered to herself as she tried to get her bearings. Once she had established where she was using the other stations as a guide she began searching for her team members. She found what was left of Arbuckle near a water coolant tank, his suit had been breached and he died of oxygen depravation. She continued to search and found Longatano floating unconscious out towards Earth's atmosphere, if she didn't save him soon he could be pulled into Earth and burn up on entry.
