Chapter five:
New Mombassa.
October 20th, 2252, military calendar
1543 time.
"Blow the charges" ordered Warrant officer 1st class Heath Kalder, a Privet did so and an explosion echoed all over the market place, caving in one of the two entrances into the markets of New Mombassa. Being a five kilometre around square, situated right in the heart of the city it was first place the Covenant landed there Phantom dropships. The Armed forces had deployed 300 men and woman reinforcements into the area an hour ago to help the beleaguered marines in the area take back the Market.
A beam of energy came from no where and struck Heath in the gut, his armour took the brunt of the blast but it still heated up his skin 'till it burned.
"Second floor on the right" he said, looking up he saw the platoon's sniper, fire a shot then keel over with a smoking hole in his forehead. "I've got it" yelled Heath and ran over to the snipers body picked up the gun and fired another shot and through the scope saw a Jackal's head blow apart. He turned around and the full extensity of the battle, hit him; there was carnage all over the place, not 30 meters away a group of marines were pinned down away by a group of four Elites. He took his platoon of seven people to flank them. Running over the slightly spongy ground of the market he fired his rifle at the Elite and took down its shields in a matter of seconds. Then with a couple more shots began to reduce its head to pieces that is until his ammunition counter red Zero. Dropping his rifle he took out his two 9mm pistols and fired at an approaching grunt putting twin holes in its chest. He saw in the corner of his eye three soldiers disintegrate with a blue flash as a plasma grenade exploded in front of them and another soldier fall under a stream of plasma coming from a turret coming from an unknown source.
"Push them back out of this area." Came the order from who ever was now in charge, at that the soldiers regrouped and moved forward in a line, Heath was in the left side and they ran into four Hunters accompanied by a rabble of grunts. He ducked behind a concrete box full of flowers and the last two members of his unit did the same to the box to his left. Poking his head round the corner he fired his pistols at one of the Hunters and watched as the bullets just pinged off its armour.
The Hunter started to advance towards him, chilled to the core just by watching it walk through the wall of soldiers totally ignoring all but him. Seeing its arm mounted cannon glow a sickly green he knew he knew he was dead but when all he heard was a zapping sound followed by pop on his left he silently thanked what ever god was watching over him then realised what the pop was. Turning to look he saw the corner of a garden box melted away as well as two smouldering bodies and the still visible looks of pain on there faces, he let out a scream and fuelled by his fury ran at the Hunter. Thinking this was the stupidest thing he had and ever will do in his life but also knew his body was on some sort of auto pilot. Nimbly dodging the Hunters bone crunching mêlée attack he manoeuvred behind it, but the ODST behind him wasn't as lucky and was splattered over the surrounding area. Out of harms way he fired two shots at the soft, orange skin on the hunters back. Priming a grenade he thrust it into the now broken skin. Using the hunter as a launching pad Heath flew off it turning to look at the grenade in its back on the way, the hunter suddenly convulsed and all of its innards raced to find a way out of its encasing armour, leaving an empty shell coated with bits of the once mighty hunter and encircled by bits of smoking flesh. Heath heard an infuriated roar and remembered Hunters travelled in pairs. Doubting he would survive another encounter with a Hunter he faced a charged plasma cannon for the second time. Not even attempting to run he stood there praying any thing would happen. Then a message came on.
""This is William
..immediate assist
.hit and falling
..hot combat zone, I
.need immediate assistance." Followed by a bang far above him, Curious about the noise he looked up to see an object trailed by smoke streak across the sky, and also realising the hunter was looking up he ran away as fast as he could. From behind him he could hear some bangs and few screams then total silence, scared shitless and unaware of what happened, he poked his head out and saw the carnage beyond. Hundreds of bodies lay around many Covenant but a lot were still carbonised human skeletons burning in there glass encrusted holes or, was a moaning Marine or ODST being picked up and carted away to a corner of the markets. He stood up and looked around for the one in charge, not seeing anyone he took command himself and sent out a system wide massage. By that action he got every soldiers attention he figured they were waiting for him to say something, looking at the people in front of him he estimated around 70-80 people were uninjured. He found the right words after some searching in his heart.
"We all know some of us won't make it out of here but many more will die if we don't show the Covenant whose boss, for those of you that have lost friends and family, fight for them. Fight for Earth, Fight for your survival." He hoped he said the right thing but his worries were put to rest when the soldiers cheered for him. Jumping off the seat he was standing on he walked over to some ODST's talking among themselves and told them to head over to the crash site of the Escape pod and escort the Spartan known as William to the Market. Wanting to inspect the defences he walked over and was pleasantly surprised that the combat engineers had constructed six towers with a Chain gun on each backed up by a mine field in front of then. He was quite happy with the defences and told the troops so, somehow making them work harder. After that he jogged over to the command area and set the troops around in the best way so that they could fire at anything coming through the main entrance and still turn around to fire at incoming dropships. Now we wait. He thought.
