If you have read the Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund, then this poem might make sense. This poem is told in the view of John-117 or the Masterchief...

They took me away, in the middle of the night
I was important to them, but I had no idea why
They took me from my family, from everything I ever knew
Wishing it was all a dream, I didn't know what to do

 Seventy-four others, just like me
 Confused, angry, scared, and perpetually
Trapped by something we had no control over
I was six years old, but when I became older

I realized why they did it to us
They made us into machines, but all machines rust
It all been striped from me, everything I once loved
Then I became the only one

One thing kept me going, remembering why they died
My brothers and sisters, all taken from me
But I could feel no pain, I couldn't cry
 Now I can truly see

That they were lives spent, not wasted
As a wise man once said
I've seen evil no normal human has seen
Evil that only nightmares can bring

The last of my kind, I remain
My pain is but a slow decay
While I am here the enemy is at bay
But when I'm gone, I cannot say
