The Holy Word: (Chapter One)
Date: 13 July 2006, 6:03 am
0400 hours, Standard UNSC Time
A blue armored Elite named Isan Mas'anlee walked through the long hallways of the cruiser until he came to one of the dropship bays. There, dozens of other Elites were directing the Grunts and Jackals of there units in preparation. Mostly loading up the needed supplies. There was also a high level on tension in the air. The discovery of Halo had been turned sour when they had failed to destroy there ship. And more they had landed pod like crafts on the ring, now it was up to the ground troops to track down and kill every remaining human on the ring. Which of course was why he was in the dropship bay.
Isan was only a very recent recruit, finishing the basic training only a few weeks ago. Which meant he was almost certainly the lowest ranking Elite in the room. Even so, as soon as he had completed the training he had been given permission to select and outfit eleven Grunts who would be in his unit for now. one was a red armored one who would serve as his assistant and second-in-command. The rest were orange armored who would serve there usual purpose as cannon fodder.
Isan made his way over to the dropship which had been assigned to transport him and his unit to the surface. As he came into sight the red armored Grunt (named Rinni) quickly stood straight and yip'ed "All supplies are on board. Awaiting further orders,"
Isan nodded, "Get onboard," he barked. the unit of grunts was quick to comply. Isan however needed to check in one last time with the commanding officer. Isan walked across the deck to a gold armored Elite that stood off to the side, talking quickly with various others of his race. Isan approached slowly and when he came in front of the CO he stood a attention.
The gold Elite nodded to him and said "What's your status?"
"Sir!" Isan said. "All of the supplies are loaded and my unit is onboard!"
"Good, then here are your orders: take the dropship down to the sacred ring, when you reach the surface, contact the Truth and Reconcilation. They will give your pilot the LZ and you, your orders,"
Yessir!" Isan said. The gold armored one turned away from him and he knew he was dismissed. He headed back over to the large U-shaped dropship and got into the vacant seat right next to Rinni. At once the ramp came up and sealed them into the dropship. purple lights snapped on to illuminate the darkness inside. The Elite fiddled with his plasma weapon a bit but then decided against it. Looking nervous in front of his unit, of Grunts no less, would probably make there nerves even more shaky then already. The truth was he was dead scared. Even though he was only facing humans with there inferior weapons, if a group of them targeted him and he was caught out in the open they would be able to drop his shields pretty quickly and then he'd be a sitting duck. That's not going to happen, he thought. It can't. In order to calm himself he began thinking back to the sermons he had heard as a child.

Isan woke with a start. He hadn't even realized he had fallen asleep. At first he thought the reason for his waking was the Grunts talking loudly but then he heard the beeping of his radio. He quickly activated it, but there was no one speaking. But there was a beep of a recorded message. he hit 'play' and a voice that was an Elite's came over his helmet speakers. "This is a message for Isan Mas'anlee. A small group of our warriors was holding position at the bottom of of a rockslide, they had trapped a group of humans in the rocks and were waiting for reinforcments. We lost contact with them shortly afterward. Go and find out what happened to them. When you touch down check in with your CO. We'll give you your orders through him,"
Sure enough the dropship began decelarating until it came to a stop. Then it slowly decended towards the ground. Finely the ramp decended and Isan leeped out, waving his Plasma Rifle around. Then he saw that his dropship was only one of five that had dropped down at the bottom of the rockslide. The dropships after dropping there load rose up into the air again and took off the direction they had come. Leaving the ground troops to survey the carnage. There were about twenty here. Mostly Grunts, but there were a few Jackals and three blue-armored Elites. Isan after looking around a little bit looked up at the top of the hill. Sure enough humans were darting from rock to rock, getting ready for the coming battle. Isan then went to find his CO which was a scarlet clad Elite. He had just finished a radio conversation and was now giving out orders to the Elites. "You and you take your units up the middle, you take the right flank, and you take the left flank," The scarlet one said to Isan. "I'll keep my unit in reserve in case something happens.
Isan began taking his unit up on the left flank as ordered, navigating through the rocks until he came upon the humans. He quickly charged up with Rinni right behind him and two of his Grunts on either side. But they were caught unexpected when they saw a human veichle parked right in front of them. A large square type of thing with four rubber circles on it, and a large gun mounted on the back. There was one human manning the gun and another two patroling in front of it. The one on the gun and one of them patroling were the usual human warriors, but one was wearing a odd type of armor. Black covered his body and there were dark green plates spread across it. Isan was a little supprised but disrgarded it as some sort of officers uiform and fired his rifle directly at the human in the odd armor. He was greatly suprised when the plasma bolts dissapated against a golded shields that came up. Then the human on the gun and the two other humans open fired. Isan threw himself off the top of the hill to evade fire and rolled for a bit. The Grunts began falling back to. Quickly Isan got up and led his team back up to the point, just out of sight. He then got on his radio and spoke directly to the CO. "Sir! Sir! They have a heavy weapons covering the left flank, my unit aren't equiped for that, request assistance,"
There was a pause and then an answer. "Acknoledged, sending a backup team to your position now. When the team arrives fall back to the LZ, Something has come up,"
"Yessir," Isan said. He risked a look around the rock he was hiding at to get another look at the human in the spiecal armor. He wondered how powerful it really was, but he couldn't find out, not right now with that gun at the ready, At last the team arrived and Isan and his unit fell back. When he was back at the LZ the scarlet clad Elite briefed him.
"A human dropship is going to land in an ajoining canyon here, there attempting to flank us and drive us into the rocks so that were surrounded. Thus, your mission is simple: destroy the dropship before it can land and deploy the troops. However, if it does manage to deploy it's troops, you will be the one in charge of covering our back. Understood?"
"Yessir," Isan said quickly.
"Good, and for this mission you will need this," the Elite reached down and hefted a large weapon onto his shoulder. A shoulder mounted fuel rod gun. The scarlet Elite handed it over to Isan and said "Good hunting, dismissed,"
Isan led his troops through the small canyon and at the end where it opened up into the larger one they took shelter in some rocks. And waited. Then when Isan thought he heard a low rumble he looked up and saw a human dropship fly above and stop a about twenty meters away. It turned to face them and then decended, it's back to a clump of large trees. When it was about eight feet above the ground Isan was confident he had a clear shot. He rose from his hiding place, took carful aim, and fired once, twice, three times. The shots hit the dropship in the belly and it flew up and back with great veliocity. It hit the farside canyon wall and exploded. Isan put down the feul rod gun and ran across the canyon for a sight of the wreckage. His unit followed close behind him. When they arrived at the wreckage they began searching for the bodys and they found them. Eleven of them to be exact. When Isan heard the figures he was unsure. Human dropships usualy held twelve. But maybe they didn't have enough warriors to dedicate a full flight to the mission. Whatever the reason was he needed to check back in with the CO and report mission complete.

Corpral Will Foreman hit the dirt, hard. He felt light-headed and his shoulder was probably bruised. But he needed to get up now. The only luck he had was that he was in the cover of some trees. When Will had heard the shots from the feul rod gun he had known what it was. He had heard them before when he had fought Hunters and knew the dropship was probably a goner. And it was.
Will got up slowly and hid more fully behind the trunk of one of the trees. When he saw the Elites and Grunts move off towards the wreckage of the Pelican he quickly climbed the tree and and hid around the middle where the branches could support him and he wouldn't be seen. He let out a quiet sigh. All those other marines lost.. But it wouldn't do him any good to dwell on that, right now getting the hell out of here was the priority. Will checked his Assualt Rifle and sidearm to make sure they were in working order. They were. And he quickly checked his radio. He received a strong, steady signal. Good.
Will noticed the Covenant come back, and for a split second he thought they had seen him. But they turned and headed back the way they came. When they were out of sight Will keyed his comm and called for evac.
Isan and his unit ran along the pathway back to the battlefeild. Isan could still not believe it though. He had just taken out a human dropship and eleven. Eleven! Of there warriors.
Isan had managed to forget to scoop up the fuel rod gun on his way back. He was a lot more confident now. It show in the way he walked and how he seemed to stand taller now. (although it could have just been the angle Rinni was looking at him from) the confidence however was shattered as he walked back and saw what had become of the battlefield. Everything either had plasma burns or bullet holes in it. And Covenant dead were all around. Isan looked up and saw another human dropship fly over him. it touched down in the rocks and he saw humans get into it. Last one to get on was the human he had seen before in the armor. Then the dropship rose and flew away, and soon was out of sight. Leaving Isan and his unit alone among the carnage.
