The Fading - Siege of New Penn
Date: 3 December 2008, 11:48 pm
2572
The beaches of Cuba
We found him in a hut. Who lives in a hut nowadays? Old. Bearded. Nothing like the man he was during the Great War. Those were the days. I never did see a Covenant but this guy supposedly has a high kill count. Definitely doesn't look it. Can't believe we had to come all the way here to pick him up. If the so called hero doesn't want to come to the war anniversaries that's his decision. Fuck. Seems like the old bastard isn't going to get up until he tells his story.
The Hands That Thrust - 32nd St. of New Penn
October 24, 2542
Outskirts of New Penn
Midnight
Lt. Lim looked out at the city lights from her seat in the Pelican. Fire and plasma. These were the lights that lit up the city now. Her platoon was part of C Company, 4th Battalion, 16th Marines. The 1st, 2nd, and 5th Battalions had assaulted the city since the morning of the 23rd. After grabbing a foothold in the city, the 3rd and 4th Battalions would come in to help recapture the city.
"Lt. Lim, we got about three minutes before we reach the LZ. We're actually a couple blocks short though, you're gonna have to walk a little longer to get to the objective point."
"Roger that."
Lt. Lim got up and grabbed onto the overhead handle. She pressed on her headset to address her platoon.
"2nd Platoon listen up. We're landing short of the original LZ. We will push forward upon landing. Bra-"
Her orders were cut off by the blaring alarms in the Pelican.
The pilot never had the chance to warn his passengers. A anti-air wraith had hit him dead on. The pilot was instantly killed. Lim was thrown off her feet and whipped into the urban jungle. The Pelican crashed into a grocery store and laid there burning.
"Shit! That was Alpha squad." Sgt. Mills shouted, "Pilot! Set us down here!"
"It's too tight. You have to rope."
"Roger that. You heard him, rope."
Bravo and Charlie squad roped down into the street. No casualties were taken during the drop. Enemy fire was actually lighter than the platoon imagined it to be.
SSgt. Bohm took a sitrep and ordered Bravo-1 to start moving up the street. He looked around and spotted a high apartment building for Charlie-2 to take position in. 2nd Platoon was in a bad situation. The Lieutenant had Alpha squad with her. Alpha squad was the assault squad. He now had a range and support squad left.
"Fuck. What am I supposed to do. Sgt. Mills, hop to."
"Ha ha. Very funny. Wait. It's coming. I know. Take Charlie-1 to the crash site. Wow
I'm psychic!"
"Fuck you smartass."
Bohm and Mills were college friends. They dropped out to fight against the Covenant. The Corps had told them that they probably were never going to see each other again. Fate had it that they were to be in the same platoon.
"Charlie-1 with me."
Sgt. Mills took Charlie-1 through the back streets and to the crash site. The building was across the street. Mills took a quick peek before giving orders to Charlie-1
"Okay. Rice and Missy stay here. Missy, don't shoot unless they know we're here. Rat and Jerry with me.
Rat, Mills, and Jerry sprinted across the street to the crash site. The Pelican had landed in a 75 degree angle. The wall kept the ass side up. Mills climbed into the internal bay. He checked for survivors.
"Rat. Get in here. We got a live one." Mills took the Marine's helmet off. It was Sgt. Jones. His dark skin was covered in sweat and blood. He looked around to see a gash in Jones' head. He got out his first aid kit, looked in it, and decided that the Pelican's emergency kit had better supplies than pain killers, a infection spray, and band-aids.
"Rat! Hurry up!"
"I'm almost up. Give me a hand."
"Shit." Mills said as he realized he had asked the shortest guy in his platoon to climb a wall. He reached over and offered his arm. Rat got up and started to help Mills patch Jones up
"Sarge this is Missy. We got 4 Grunts and a Elite coming down the street. Looks like they're coming to check up on the crash."
"Crap. Kill the Elite. Try to get the Grunts too but kill the Elite first."
"Roger. Safety off, firing now."
Mills heard four cracks and failed to hear any Grunts squealing. She must've gotten two for one, he thought as he looked for a stretcher. He found one in the overhead compartments. Rat and Mills put Jones on the stretcher and carried him down. Mills knew the Covenant were going to come back so he rigged one of the bodies with grenades.
"Missy and Rat on the stretcher. Rice, you got point. Jerry on rear. Move out."
Before they even took a step forward, a grenade landed near them.
UNSC Guy Fawkes
"Captain Louis Lussac, Charlie Company, reporting for duty."
"Come in Captain. I am under the knowledge that you do not drink?"
"No sir. Not on duty."
"Good man."
Capt. Lussac waited as General Yuri poured himself a drink.
"Captain, I understand that you're family lived in New Penn?"
"Sir, yes sir."
"I am worried that you won't be able to do your job out there Captain. Keep our boys alive."
"Sir. I am fully capable of performing my duties, sir."
"Don't let your emotions get the best of you. You're a good man. Don't turn into a monster."
"Sir, I have no intention of doing that, sir."
"Good. That is all. You are dismissed."
"Sir, yes sir."
General Yuri finished his drink as Capt. Lussac left his office.
When Mills finally opened his eyes and couldn't hear anything. He looked up to see Jerry dragging him and Rice. Missy and Rat were up ahead with Jones. His ears started to function.
"Sarge! Fire your weapon!" Rice screamed.
Mills found it intriguing that he had held on to his weapon, even during unconsciousness. He didn't bother aiming as he shot his rifle.
"FUCK MY LIFE! YOU SHOT ME!"
Mills paused to see a clean hole in Rice's right boot. Whoops, he thought.
"That wasn't me. Suck it up and shoot pussy."
"Aw fuck you and
fuck!"
They reached the LZ and the remaining Covenant fell back when they saw the rest of the platoon.
"Corpsman. Sarge and Rice need tending to."
"Yup. You're right. They do look tender."
"Hey man. Look at this. Can plasma do this?" Rice said as he lifted his leg.
"Uhh
looks like a projectile did that. Did you shoot yourself?" Don Rachel Ramirez asked as she removed the boot.
Rice punched Mills in the arm.
"Asshole."
"It was a fucking accident." Mills exclaimed as he rubbed his arm. "How bad are we?"
"Burns and scratches. You'll live."
"What about Jones?"
"Concussion, broken legs, and whatever the hell I couldn't find. He'll live too.
"This is NAC( Navy-Air Coordinator) Toby Jr. to UNSC Buddha's Palm requesting a med-evac. We are five kliks south of Objective STAMP."
"Shit." Toby Jr. looked up at SSgt. Bohm. "They're asking us to get to the objective first. It's too tight here."
"I understand." Bohm walked over to Mills and Rachel Ramirez. "You'll have to walk guys. Bravo-1 secured the intersection up ahead and it's five kliks from there."
"Screaming Mary in Bethlehem. I got a hole in my foot."
"Hey, shit happens."
"Fuck that shit."
Charlie-1 and Corpsman Rachel Ramirez divided up the wounded between themselves. Charlie squad and Bravo-2 jogged up to Bravo-1. Pfc. Nelson was on the MG.
"Welcome to the party." Cpl. Clayton remarked. "Everything's been quiet for a while now."
"Pack it up. We going to Objective STAMP."
"Yes sir. You heard the man, fold the twenty four-seven and lets get out of here."
2nd Platoon walked ten feet past the intersection when they came under fire.
"I thought you said you had this place secured!" Bohm said as he fired back.
"We did. We are now past the intersection. Not our jurisdiction." Clayton replied.
"Corpsman! We got two guys down!"
"Staff Sergeant! They're dead! We gotta move!"
"2nd Platoon double time!"
"Jerry hurry Jerry hurry Jerry-"
"Will you shut up! You want me to leave you here. In this dirty fuckin street." Jerry stopped in the middle of the street and dropped Rice while plasma was burning the ground around them.
"Why in the name of God would you not only stop, but drop me in the street."
"Jerry! Pick him up and haul ass!" Rat yelled. "You guys are gonna get left behind."
Rachel Ramirez ran past them supporting Mills.
"How the hell did they not get shot?" Rachel Ramirez asked.
"Don't know. Someone must love them." Mills answered.
When they reached Objective STAMP, enemy fire had dwindled down to nothing. The wounded were taken to the casualty collection point. They would be evacuated later. Objective STAMP was a Ultra-mart parking lot. 2nd Platoon had finally left 32nd Street.
"Sorry to be the killer, but weren't we supposed to clear the streets till STAMP and then await new orders?" Clayton asked
"Oh. Yeah
well we
hmm
Toby Jr., can you call a air-strike down the street."
"I'll try
. We got lucky. Four Longswords coming in. Sit back and enjoy the show"
The Longswords came in low and dropped their ordnances. Two lines of fire erupted as the buildings collapsed. If any Covenant were alive, they were probably content hiding under the debris.

Forward Command Base STAMP-New Penn
Six a.m.
"3rd Platoon listen up. Its been a long morning and it's going to be a longer day. We got ourselves a Colonel Hackman and his staff stuck at the city hall. It's our job to get them back here. We'll be taking the Hogs. We drive up. Extract the Colonel. They have their own rides so you don't have to worry about giving up shotgun. Any questions? Good. Lock n load, we got a job to do."
Lt. Nigel put on his helmet as his men got up and into the Warthogs. He walked over to the third vehicle to find Pfc. Patterson on the wheel. He got in and the convoy started moving.
They drove 3 kilometers before encountering enemy fire. The return fire was a wall of lead and it discouraged the Covenant. No casualties were taken as they entered the city hall courtyard. Nigel, Sgt. Foxx, and NAC Patel exited the vehicles and entered the building. Colonel Hackman was sitting in the lobby smoking a cig.
"Welcome boys. It's about time you got here. Take a breather before you leave. You're probably wondering why I'm stuck here."
"No sir, just wondering when you'll be ready to leave."
"You're from C Company aren't you?"
"Yes sir."
"The Crack heads, the Cum Buckets."
"Thank you sir. Hard to be famous."
"Let's just go."
The Colonel and his staff got into two transport Warthog's and the convoy started back. Just as they were exiting the courtyard, three fuel rod rounds hit the first Hog, causing it to explode and block the entrance.
"Back up! Out the back!"
Before the convoy could turn around the rear Hog was stuck by two grenades. The grenades went off before the Marines could get out.
"Push out! Push out or we'll get trapped!" Hackman was desperate to get out of the courtyard.
"Patel, I want a strafe through the streets."
"This is NAC Patel 3rd Platoon Charlie Company requesting Hornets on President Street."
The convoy got out of the courtyard under heavy fire. One more Warthog was lost in the process. The Hornets came low and fast, guns blazing and missile's flying. One exploded near Nigel, sending dirt and gravel into his face.
"A fucking trap. The Covie bastards let us in here."
"Ell-tee, the staf-
"
"Foxx, you're breaking up. Repeat over."
"Staff left behind. Orders sir."
"They're all yours."
Foxx turned his Warthog back to the city hall. The driver on the staff's Hog had gotten shot. Foxx jumped out and pulled the dead driver out. Why didn't one of them drive? he thought. He gunned the Hog while the other one covered his six. Half of the staff member's were dead. The convoy was too far ahead for him too catch up and under too much fire for them to stop.
"Banshee's!"
Foxx looked back long enough to see three banshee's coming straight for them. Private Crowler fired the LAAG at them. He was a crack shot with it. The first banshee lost control and crashed into a building. The second exploded, shooting it's pilot out the cockpit. The third banshee was able to get a fuel rod round off before dying. The round was overshot. It hit a pile of debris ahead of the Warthog. A cylinder block came flying out of the pile, hitting the driver in the head. The Warthog flipped as the driver lost both his consciousness and the wheel. Crowler had been thrown out of the vehicle. His driver was dead. With nothing but his magnum, Crowler sprinted into a alleyway, hoping that he would be able to make it back to STAMP.
Foxx saw Crowler survive but knew that he wouldn't be able to go back for him. He sped through the fires of hell to catch up with the convoy. There was a sharp turn to the right one block ahead. He didn't bother to slow down, hoping that the vehicle wouldn't flip on him. He turned the corner to see another burning Hog. How many more men are we going to lose for the Colonel?, he thought. He gripped the wheel tighter as he drove on, knowing that death would be a very close companion in this war.
Lt. Nigel was too busy returning fire to notice that the convoy had missed a turn. Only when he stopped to reload did he realize that they were lost.
"Patel! Where are we?"
"We-
own-
three blo-
"
"Bloody fucking headset! Patterson! Where are we!"
"Hell if I know sir! Wish these bitches would stop shooting!"
"Fuck! Stop the vehicle."
"What!?"
"I said stop the fucking vehicle!"
Patterson slammed on the brakes, causing Nigel to hid the windshield. Nigel got out, swearing, and marched over to Patel's Warthog.
"Where are we."
"Too far ahead. Take the-"
"Get in the lead vehicle. Get us back."
"Yes sir."
Pvt. Crowler made his way through the alleys of New Penn. He was a native and knew the streets from countless street fights he'd been in. All he had to do was make it to Big Bob's place. They had dug a hole from his place to Ultra-mart's bathrooms. Two more blocks and he'd make it. All was quiet since the convoy left. A couple Grunts walked past him but he was quiet. If he ran into Jackals, that would be a problem. He made it. Crowler got in, and started to walk the tunnel. An hour pasted before he made it. He was about to exit the tunnel when he heard a energy sword activate. Before he could turn around and shoot his magnum, he was sliced in two. The stealth Elite deactivated his sword and proceeded to walk back to report his find to his superiors.
Lt. Nigel and his convoy made it back, but not before losing one more Warthogs and three more Marines. The Colonel and his staff had cost him dearly. 17 good Marines for one man. He wondered if it was worth the trade.

C Company HQ, STAMP-New Penn
9 a.m.
"Captain. Our casualty list."
Captain Lussac looked down the list. 19 KIA and 1 MIA from 3rd Platoon, 10 from 2nd Platoon, and 4th Platoon was down to one squad. The only reason 1st Platoon was untouched was because it was a support platoon.
"What are we down to Lieutenant."
"Two Corpsman, Lt. Nigel, two NAC's."
"How the hell did Charlie squad survive in 4th Platoon?"
"Their Pelican died out midway. By the time they caught up, everyone was dead. They made their way to STAMP with little resistance."
"Thank you Lieutenant. You're free to go."
"Sir."
Capt. Lussac walked out of the small building and into the parking lot next to the HQ. Capt. Scott was outside also. They made eye contact and Lussac knew exactly what Scott was thinking. He too had lost men.
"You too?" Scott asked.
"Yes. Not even a day, and I lost too many men."
"It's impossible not to lose any men."
"True, but it doesn't mean I have to like it."
"There's nothing you can do about it."
"I could be in the field. Maybe I could've saved one of them."
"We are in the field. Three steps away from the firefights. That's close enough to be able to see the enemy and to shoot them."
"Still
"
"Stop complaining. You sound like a rookie. We missed the first battle, but we'll definitely be in the rest. We'll be leading from the front now, not the rear."
"You're right. I should head back now. Nice talking with you."
"Anytime Louis, anytime."
Before either could head back inside, the alarm triggered. Three sharp notes were screeching in a fast pace with a pause in between. This meant that the base was under attack. Lussac ran back inside.
"Lieutenant! Get 1st Platoon to rally point Golf."
"Yes sir!"
Capt. Lussac grabbed his helmet and his rifle and ran to the company radio.
"All platoons, rally point Golf. I repeat, rally point Golf."
Deep Breath, Exhale, Push Back
October 24, 2542
Rally Point Golf, STAMP- New Penn
"We got Covies coming in from the north. They're hitting us pretty hard. Third and Second Platoon are already there. We'll regroup with them and defend the base. Move out."
Captain Lussac was surprised to see only half his company present. He didn't think that some of his men would be near the assault when it happened. He was running with the men when the second alarm went off. It started from the west and made it's way to the rest of the base, indicating an attack from that side.
"Fourth Platoon to the north. First Platoon with me to the west."
SSgt. Sergei of the 4th Platoon took off to the north with his squad while Lussac took the rest of the company to the west. When Lussac reached the west side, it was hell. The Infirmary was located there. Wounded and dying Marines were fighting as hard as they could but were losing.
"Lieutenant! Find Doctor Smithers! Get him back. We'll need him later."
Doctor Tim "Tin Man" Smithers was one of the best doctors the Navy provided. He was a civilian doctor that volunteered to help when the war started. He got his nickname by being able to fix a man up without making a face, no matter how awful the screams were. He was a dedicated man in his sixties that was assigned to C Company. Lussac had seen him shoot Covies and patch up a wounded marine at the same time. Lt. Williams rushed into the building too find blood everywhere. Marines were cut in half and ripped up into shreds. Only one thing could have done this. Stealth Elites. Williams picked up a shotgun that was on the floor. It was quiet. Eerie.
"Tin Man!"
How the hell did they get in here
"Doctor Smithers!"
The Elites had to get past a shitload of checkpoints and Marines to get this close
"Williams, over here."
Williams turned to see the Smithers with three other Marines. The Tin Man had a can of spray paint in his hand and a magnum in the other.
"Doctor, I'm here to get you out. You have to get away from the fight."
"I understand. We lost a number of good doctors today."
"We were in the bathroom when they hit. Fucking invisible bastards. We came out when you called out. I hope we're not making a mistake." One of the marines said.
Williams and the Tin Man followed the marines as they led the way. They walked back to the entrance, but before they could leave, a stealth Elite attacked them. The first Marine was knocked over, while the other two proceeded to get cut up. Williams pushed Smithers behind him and fired the shotgun.
Nothing. It was out of ammo. He tried to use the shotgun as a club but to no avail. The gun along with his head was sliced in half. Before the Elite could get to the Doctor, it was shot in the back by the remaining Marine. Smithers sprayed the Elite in the face area and fell back. The Elite was blind. It swung wildly but was quickly cut down by the two men. Smithers helped the Marine up.
"You hurt?"
"No sir. I'm good to go."
They exited the building to find that the defense of the base wasn't going too well. Captain Lussac saw them and ran over.
"Where's Williams?"
"I'm sorry my friend, he's dead."
"Motherfuckin sonsabitches! Shit, things aren't going too well here. You, get him back to safety."
"Sir, yes sir." Private Felix answered. He was glad to be able to get away from the carnage.
And with that the Captain was off. Felix and Smithers started to run back, away from the fight.
2nd and 3rd Platoon were loitering when the attack happened. They were trading stories and chewing on some food when they heard gunfire and the battle cry of dying Elites. The alarms went off moments later. Lt. Nigel got everyone together and joined the fight. Most of the marines came to the first alarm. There were hundreds of men and women fighting to defend the base. Motor and artillery rounds pounded the marines. They answered back with volleys of their own.
The Marines fought valiantly but slowly lost ground. They were being pushed back.
"Ell-tee! We should fall back! Take a break!"
"Take a breather! Is that a joke?"
"I'm serious man!"
"C Company this is Lieutenant Nigel. Regroup at the rear. Regroup in the rear."
Lt. Nigel and Cpl Clayton made their way to the back were it was fairly safe. Sgt. Foxx, NAC Patel, and most of 2nd Platoon were gathered there.
"What's it look like Foxx." Nigel asked.
"Most of 2nd Platoon's gone, eleven to be exact. You, me, Patel, Ryan, and Seth for us."
"Is that
never mind. How did we lose so many?"
"Well, I was with Bravo and Alpha until the motors started coming in. All things went to hell after that."
"Okay. Get ready to head back in five minutes."
"Sir, about that, shouldn't we evac. Seeing how we lost so many guys."
"That's what I want but I doubt we're gonna get it."
"Lieutenant Nigel!"
"SSgt. Sergei! Good to see you. Come to join the fight?"
"No sir. Came to get you. We got new orders from General Yuri."
"Yes?"
"He's currently in his office. We have to get a cluster of nukes and get it there."
"Stay here or be with nukes. Nice. Great options. Alright, lead the way."
C Company got the nukes to the Colonel and the General with little trouble. The Colonel was sitting there, oblivious to the marines, trying to come up with an alternate plan than activating the nukes.
"Sir. I cannot stress how important this battle is. How important this position is. We cannot blow the nuke up."
"Tell me Hackman, why is it important."
"Sir, from here we can
do stuff
win, our boys can win. They will win."
"We might win here Colonel. Defend the base, counterattack, and retake this city."
"Yes, yes! Now we're talking. We can do this."
"And all this will be beneficial to us only if the Navy wins in space."
"And they will. The Navy boys are good! They'll win too!"
"I just got word that they will be retreating, even if we get left behind. The Covenant came to this city for a reason. A reason that we will never know. It's too late for us. Accept it."
"How long. How long before the jump?"
"I don't know. I was told five minutes ago. When I ordered for the nukes."
"I'm leaving. You should do the same."
Colonel Hackman started for the door but was stopped by Lt. Nigel.
"Take us with you. No way you're leaving without us, we rescued you."
"Fine. I don't care, as long as there's room you can come."
The group met up with Pvt. Felix and Doctor Smithers halfway. They explained the situationand they collectively went to the Pelicans.
"We got twenty-five people in total. Two Pelicans should be enough." Hackman said.
"Make it twenty-four. I can't leave the Captain."
"What's your name."
"Bohm, sir."
"Okay Bohm, that's fine with me. Everyone else, hop on."
Everybody boarded except SSgt. Bohm, NAC Toby Jr., Smithers, Pfc. Nelson, and LCpl Williamson from 4th Platoon.
"What are you guys doing. Get your asses in here." Lt. Nigel ordered.
"I've been friends with Lussac for too long to leave him here, and besides, he'd do the same for us." Smithers said, "We might make it out so don't worry about us and leave."
"Tin Man, you're gonna need this." Foxx said as he handed him his rifle, "good luck."
"Thank you."
The five men watched as both Pelicans lifted off and left. They didn't stare long. Bohm took point as he led the group west towards the Captains last known position. The western line had taken a beating. It was 25 feet shorter than it usually was. They skimmed the crowd but couldn't find the Captain.
"Captain! Captain Lussac!"
"That guy got called back by the General. You'll find him there."
"Thanks." Bohm replied, "Alright, I don't know-"
"Dropships! Shoot'em down! Shoot'em down!"
"Hunters! Fall back, back to the line Echo! Fall back!"
The group started running with the other Marines when a pair of Hunters landed in front of them. Smithers got swiped, his aged body breaking. Nelson rolled past one and started to shoot its back. The surrounding marines didn't bother to shoot, they just ran. The Hunter realized this and turned around to shoot Nelson. When it turned, Toby Jr. climbed up its back and shot down at its head. Bohm and Williamson shot at it also. Between the four of them, they brought the monster down. The other Hunter fired its fuel rod cannon, killing Williamson and several other marines. The remaining three tried to escape but Toby Jr. was swept from his feet.
"Toby! Nelson, help me pick him up."
"No. Leave me- watch out!"
The Hunter had come to finish the job. Nelson and Bohm shot at it, but no damage was done. It was blinded by anger. Toby had killed its partner. It lumbered over to Toby. Gently put its foot on him so the weight wouldn't kill him, and aimed its cannon at Toby's face. Before it could shoot, Toby shoved grenades up the barrel.
"Motherfucker. Try firing it now bitch."
It did. The cannon exploded, dismembering its arm and killing Toby. Nelson and Bohm finished the job. They rushed towards General Yuri's office. The north side had fallen also. General Yuri's office was the center of a large circle of marines. They went inside to see a Captain Lussac, who was covered in blood of all types of color, and General Yuri finish up talking.
"Sergeant Bohm, Nelson, welcome. The General and I just finished our discussion."
"What's the plan sir?"
"We're going to get their army as close as we can to us. The nukes are already armed."
"Great plan sir."
"No. It's a bad plan. This completes me as a monster, killing friend and foe for revenge."
"You're not killing us sir. We're here by choice. It's been an pleasure serving under you."
"And it's been an honor to lead you. Now if you don't mind, it sounds like the Covenant initiated their last attack. Shall we?"
The Pelicans lifted out into the air. If the base looked like it was in terrible shape from the ground, it looked worse from the air. The humans had lost. Lt. Nigel looked stared until the bay doors closed. He, everybody, from C Company felt bad. They had left their commanding officer and friends when they needed them most.
"We got lucky Lieutenant, the fleet was about to retreat." said the pilot.
"How was the space battle?"
"We were doing fine initially, but their reinforcements came about ten minutes ago. That's when the Admiral ordered a retreat if the tide didn't change soon. They fought on for while but it was a lost cause."
-This is Juliet-009, we got incoming Banshees
"Roger that Juliet-009, Juliet-021 copies. We got Banshees boys. Hang on."
The two Pelicans raced to get away from the Banshees. They twisted and turned, trying to lose them. The pilot of Juliet-021 was able to shake his banshee off, but Juliet-009 wasn't as lucky. The Banshee's pilot was too experienced. Juliet-009 was shot down, killing everybody inside.
"We lost Juliet-009. Fuel rod. No survivors. I'm sorry guys."
Juliet-021 was the last one into Buddha's Palm. Before the passengers could even get out, she slipspaced to a random position.
