One Mans Struggle: {1} The Struggle of Losing Dear Friends
Date: 30 April 2005, 5:56 AM
It was cold, the sun was rising quickly, and 3 dozen men sat in the armored bunker. One of the men, the dealer in a game of cards name was Cyrus Billup. That is Major Cyrus Billup to you. "So, anyway, any of you guys heard that new tune they have on the radio? It goes sort of like ba-da-ba-dup, really catchy. I can't get the damn song out of my head," Major Frankie Spinelli said while he snapped his fingers. "What the hell are you talking about? We were talking about those new military issued Battle Rifles and you go on about some stupid song. Why do you always have to do that," said Corporal Steven Reilly, a real tight-ass who would get on you for what usually seemed any pointless reason. "Do what? All I did was ask if any of you had heard that catchy tune; that is all," said Frankie while he snapped his fingers again. "Oh yea, real catchy tune, eh?" Steve snapped his fingers mockingly. "Here, how about you both shut the hell up so I can hear something," Cyrus said with his finger to his lips. "I could've sworn I heard something." "Well, can you describe the noise?" Steve followed up with a laugh. "You are so paranoid it is pathe..." He was cut off as a loud explosion erupted as it hit the ground above and outside the base. It suddenly tore into the titanium plating. Plasma fire could be seen by the momentary neon flashes that could be seen through the cracks created by the explosion. "Holy shit! Did you see that!? The Covenant, they're here aren't they?" Cyrus nodded with a grim expression. He raced for the transmitter. "Please, please help us. The Covenant are here, they are here at Alpha Bunker K13. Please, there are only a couple dozen of us, please help us!" The weakened wall exploded, and Plasma fire and Needler needles singed the air. Steven grabbed his MA5B and unloaded a clip into the dark, thick smoke erupting form the rubble that had made up the now crumbling wall. "Did I get any? Hey Cy, you think I got any?" Yelps could be heard before Cyrus could answer, and a wounded, limping, bleeding Grunt came through the huge opening in the wall. It spurted blood on Steven, and died. "Ah, what is this shit? Of course, I shoot it; it has to cum on me!" A rogue Plasma bolt flew through the opening and connected with Steven's throat. He squealed, grabbed his throat and fell quickly. His fingers spread, and blood squirted out. He was mumbling something, but no one understood him. He was finally silent and motionless. "Did I just see my friend die? Oh my God, I did. I'm going to be sick." Frankie gripped the trash can with his hands and vomit erupted out of his mouth. 20 or 30 needles flooded the makeshift 'doorway' and all connected with Frankie's midsection. Tearing flesh could be heard after the first few connections. "If you get out of- get out of here; tell my wife that I will be waiting in Heaven. I love you, Cy, I love you." "No! Not both my friends in 15 minutes. You are going to make it." He was lying to himself. Frank was pinned against the wall by Plasma tipped needles that probably oozed something, well, something not very good . . . acid maybe. Cyrus held Frankie until he stopped breathing, then closed his eyes. He grabbed Steven's extra clip and headed for the opening slowly, observantly. He mumbled a prayer to himself. "Amen," he said aloud. He suddenly heard someone barking in what seemed like a foreign language. He knew who it was though. It was the Covenant Grunts. Some of the transcripts he had received during his stay at the bunker had said they barked instead of actually speaking in any language. "Captain Beauregard, Commander of the UNSC fleet warship Crazy Horse, do you copy? I repeat, do you copy me? We have received transmissions of a supposed attack on Alpha Bunker K13, is this true? Do you copy?" Cyrus was still through the whole thing, listening for any sign of sent reinforcements or any help at all that was close. He sprinted toward the transmitter. "Help, oh God help. We have been attacked and need immediate reinforcements. Well, I guess we don't, but I do. I don't know how many are left, I know for sure two are dead though. Please, now! Send help to Alpha Bunker K13, now!" Cyrus's plead for help was cut short by the wailing of a Banshee. "Oh shit," he screamed into the transmitter. He dropped the oval, black input walkie-talkie and put his back to the wall that had a large hole in the middle of it. He stopped breathing to make it easier to hear the sounds of the Banshee. "Sophia, I am doing this for you, I love you baby," he whispered to himself. He stepped out, facing the hole, and his jaw dropped. There were over a dozen of troopers fighting the Covenant. Finally, he knew for sure that he wasn't alone in this battle. He leveled his weapon, aimed at a Grunt, and let out a three-round burst. The rounds flew through the air, and connected with the Grunt. The first bullet ripped through its chest, the second hit its left 'nub', and the third tore through its skull and spread bits of blood, skull, and brain onto the grass under. The Grunt fell to the ground, dead before it hit. The unfortunate thing was it alerted the rest of the Covenant to Cyrus's presence. He smiled nervously, and ducked back behind the wall. "What to do, what to do." He glanced around the room, nothing. Something or someone trudged around the corner, and squealed. It was another Grunt, and it had its weapon leveled at Cyrus's sternum. Cyrus jumped and rolled, and heard crackling where he had been a moment before. He got on his knees, aimed quite quickly and sloppily, but wrapped his index finger around the trigger and tightened. He fired 8 rounds, all which hit the Grunt in the midsection. It sprayed blood all over the wall, and backed up against it. It held its weapon up, and fired. The plasma bolt hit Cyrus in the hip. He doubled over, and grimaced. "Go to Hell," he screamed as he pulled the trigger and 11 bullets ripped the poor Grunt to pieces, literally. The wall was covered with bone, blood, and pulp. He grabbed his hip, and gritted his teeth. He smiled at what he saw on the wall, but got to his feet knowing he had to help the other marines out. He had to or they would all die. He reloaded his MA5B, and charged through the hole, his weapon ready. He saw a Jackal, a bird-like creature that usually always carries a plasma shield. He grabbed a grenade off of his side, pulled its pin, and tossed it at the Jackal's feet. The fragmentation grenade exploded, shrapnel ripped the Jackal in half, and sent it flying. It landed on a couple of Grunts, taking them down. He readied another grenade, ripped its pin off, and sent it flying toward the whole group. The explosion shook the Earth. He glanced at the pile. Nothing was moving. He fired repeatedly at an Elite, and with the help of a fellow marine, took it down. The Covenant still outnumbered them by hundreds, though. All 18 of the marines fired upon the hordes of Covenant somehow fit into this small space. Cyrus heard droning noises. He knew what it was. He turned and saw salvation. He saw hope. A UNSC Pelican Drop ship lowered to the ground. "All ri-," He was cut off as a concentrated bolt of superheated plasma hit him the left arm. He turned in time to see it melt away and fall into a pile of bloody ashes on the ground. The wind coming from the Pelican blew it all away. Cyrus fell to the ground screaming. He was helped by two marines, and laid down in the Pelican. A large bandage was placed over his hip. As for his arm, they just hurried to the nearest medical station. But it didn't matter. Cyrus had lived, he had lived and won, or at least that is what he thought. He grabbed the nearest marine, which happened to be a very good friend and told him, "I survived; I get to see my wife and kids again!" The marine's face went white, and he turned away. "What, what is it?" "Zima Xylpedia, it, it was glassed. I'm sorry Cy, but they're dead. They are all dead!"
