Journals of the Doomed
Date: 27 December 2001, 1:26 AM
Journal of Private Salak, Robert A. 3 hours before landing of ring world Date: July 27, 2895 >KZZZZZZ< Is this thing on? Testing, one, two, three. My name is Robert Arthur Salak. This journal is to be despatched to my parents in case of my death, along with my remains. The Pillar of Autumn will soon arrive at its destination. Whether the Covenant will be there or not is a mystery. Sergeant Hawk isn't that worried. He says that if the Covenant are there, they won't take us down without a fight. That's true, but it doesn't keep me from worrying. We were trained to be the best of the best, but we're only human. We do have this strange feeling that sergeants don't know about. It's called fear. I've been walking around the ship in my spare time, thinking about what's to come. I don't know what will happen to us. We will just have to face it when it comes. I have been hanging around the cryo bay, and I saw him. The Master Chief. Sole SpartanII survivor of the battle at Reach. I hope that if we end up in trouble, he'll be there with us. I made friends with an ordinance tech today. His name was Sam Collins. He said he'd helped put the Chief down for his little nap, and heard all of the stories about him. He seems pretty cool. Some of the other marines, especially Joe Karmak, poke fun at me for making friends with a civilian. I argued that civilians are people to, but they didn't seem to care. I spoke with the sarge, and he said that we'd be out of our jump in three hours. I hope so. Space travel makes me want to puke. >KZZZZZZ< End Transmission. Journal of Private Salak, Robert A. 2 hours after the landing on ring world
>KZZZZZ< I am weak and tired, journal. We have landed on a strange ring world. It is beautiful and horrifying at the same time. I have seen pictures of Earth, and imagine it to be like this world, only a sphere, not a ring. It is also horrifying because of what we have found here. But first, let me tell you of how I got of the Pillar of Autumn. The ordinance techs awakened the Master Chief and got him battle ready. After they finished the tests, the main tech in the enclosed balcony was killed by several Covenant Elite troopers. It was Sam. I know because I ran over his broken, bleeding body trying to get to a life pod. It was a heated battle to get out. I lost several of my friends, Jason Argo, Tom Mertens, and Billy Connella. The rest of my squad made it out. We were trapped in the mess hall, at first. We were surrounded. Suddenly, the Master Chief appeared from the bridge, and helped us out. I'm not sure if we would have made it if it weren't for him. Anyway, my squad and a lot of other marines boarded a life pod, and we shot off. None too soon, either. A Covenant boarding craft had used the airlock behind us, and hoards of enemies emerged. The Covenant ships fired at us, but missed. I can't say the same for the next pod, however. We came into the atmosphere of the ring, and made a rough landing. We were battered up a bit, but we were all right. We moved out and into a group of high rocks, where we held position. Soon, a Covenant drop ship landed, and sent out a few troops. One of my sniper friends, David Hileke, nailed four of them, and the rest of us mopped up. Then the ship returned, and dropped off another load. None too soon, the cavalry arived. It was the Master Chief again, and he was in a Warthog this time. His gunner helped mow down the aliens while the Chief jumped out and helped. After several of theses skirmishes, a Pelican appeared, and we all jumped in, except the Chief and gunner. Cortana, the ship's AI, said that they wer going to look for more survivors. The drop ship dropped us off at a mountain cave, which is our base of operations now. All the surviving marines and crew are here now, except the Chief and his squad. I wonder what they're up to? It's getting dark, and I'd better get some sleep. >KZZZZZZ< End transmission.
Journals of the Doomed: Part 2

Journal of Private Salak, Robert A. 9 hours after landing of ring world Date: July 28, 2895 Journal, today I learned a little bit more about the Master Chief. I was working by his side today as reinforcements at a gravity lift to get inside a Covenant ship, the Truth and Reconciliation. Around us were strewn bodies of Covenant grunts, jackals, elites, and even two hunters. When we got inside the gravity lift, we were pulled up into the ship. When we arrived, there was no Covenant resistance around, but all of the doors were locked. Uploading audio recording now: >KZZZZZZ< Cortana: No Covenant forces detected. Bob Thomas: No Covenant? Maybe nobody's home. Master Chief: Stay sharp. Jim Kamonski: I have a bad feeling about this. David Hileke: Shut up! I hear something. Robert Salak: What is that? >BIIIINNNGGGG< (Doors on either side of the room open) >DDDDDOW! DDDDDDDDOW!< >Tink, tink, tinkle, tink< (Covenant swordsman falls to the ground) Jim: Nice one, M.C.! Bob: CONTACTS! LOTS OF CONTACTS! Me: No Covenant! You had to open your mouth! David: Arg! >DDDDDDDOW< Eat that! Me: Dave, you all right? David: Yeah, just got some plasma scoring. >DDDDOOOW< >DDDDDDDOW< Jim: Got 'em! Bob: Cover me! Jim: You always were hapless, Bob. >DDDDDOOOOWWW< >DDDDDDOOOOWWW< Grunt: Heads up! >WHIIIIFFFF< M.C. :Move it! Get away from that thing! Bob : Son of a gun, get the **** thing off me! >KRA-BOOOOOM!< Bob: EARRRRGGGG! Jim: Right, eat this! >DDDDDDDDOOOOOWWWW<
>FFW>>>> >FFW>>>> >FFW>>>> Master Cheif: Hileke, Salak, move to either sides of the door and hold position. I'm going to draw the invisible elite's fire. Help me take them out. David: Gotcha! Me: Rojer that, M.C. >HISSSSS< (door opens) Elites: Growwwwwllllll M.C.: Now! >DDDDDDOOOOOWWWW< >TINK, TINKLE, TINK< Elite 1: REAAAAARRRRRG! >ZZZOW< >ZZZOW< >ZZZOW< David: Arg! I'm hit! Me: David! >DDDDDDOOOOOWWWW< David: I'm all right. Thanks, Master Chief! >KSSSZZZIISSHHH< ( Cell bay doors open ) Captain Keyes: Coming here was reckless, and you should know better. Thanks.
>FFW>>>> >FFW>>>> >FFW>>>> Cortana: Captain! Hunters! >SSSMMMMMACKKKKK!< (Keyes drives Covenant drop ship into hunters, killing them) David: Nice one sir! Keyes: Time for a little payback.
>End Recording< I know I skipped a bit, but the battle details would bore you. Anyway, the Captain piloted a Covenant drop ship to our base of operations to get ready for the next mission. If things go the way that they have been, it won't be easy.

ÝÝÝÝJournal of Private Salak, Robert A. ÝÝÝÝ72 Hours after landing of Halo ÝÝÝÝNovember 30, 2889
ÝÝÝÝJournal, today we have made a discovery. We discovered the location of the control room of Halo. Halo is this ring world that we're on. Cortana said that the Covenant believes that whoever controlls Halo controls the fate of the universe. If it is some kind of weapon, the Covenant are bound to use it against us. I just pray every day that we will get there first. My Bible is getting rather tattered, and I'm almost out of tape. Anyway. ÝÝÝÝThis morning, we stormed the beach to activate what the Covenant call the "Silent Cartographer." There were a lot of elites, grunts, and jackals. If the Master Chief weren't there, the rest of us Marines would have been toasted. The marines drew the alien's fire, while the M.C. flanked and pitched grenades. The man is unstoppable. After we cleared the area of hostiles, a Pelican, Echo 4-19, dropped off its Warthog. The Chief climbed into the driver seat, I was gunner, and David Hileke was passenger, this time sporting his beloved sniper rifle. We went around the bend, and there was a small group of Jackals there. The Chief ran two over, David nailed three with his sniper rifle, and I got a few with the cannon. We stormed up the beach, and stopped at an artificial cliff edge. There were about thirty hostiles. David hopped out and opened up with his pistol, I mowed down grunts with the cannon, and the M.C. took out several elites with grenades and his assault rifle. The master chief then did something I never expected. We all went down the corridors of the cliff, in the Warthog! That was the bumpiest ride in my life. There were plenty of baddies at the end. David and I nailed a few, but the Master Chief was relentless on the little scum. Before we could go through the door that led to the Cartographer, the Covenant locked the door. Cortana couldn't open it. The M.C. told us to hold position, because he was going to deactivate the security systems. ÝÝÝÝIt was an hour before the door opened, and a swordsman elite popped out. We gunned him down, throwing our cards down to get to our weapons. It was too bad, too. I had a flush. I could have won back the cigars I lost do David. Oh, well. ÝÝÝÝThe Master Chief said for us to go outside, and that Echo 4-19 would pick us up. I wanted to argue, but thought better of it. It would be harder to detect one man than three, and the Chief doesn't exactly need back up. We were picked up, and dropped off back at base. The pilot said that she needed to pick up the M.C. and the Warthog. "Fine by me," I said, "I'm dead tired." Now, I'm going to find a nice, comfortable rock, and go to sleep.

Journal of Private Salak,Robert A. 96 hours after the landing of Halo December 1, 2889
Journal, I am shivering around a small fire inside our cave. The weather has made a sudden turn for the worse, as our mission today seemed to do. Today, I, David, Thomas Johnson, and Al Shepherd were on our way to support the Master Chief, when we were engaged by Covenant Banshees. Banshees are sleek attack fighters used by the Covenant. Anyway, we went down, and the Master Chief worked his way down to us by going through the Super structure on his way to the control room. Before we went down, our pelican dropped of our Scorpion tank, and we jumped out for dear life. Sergeant Hawk was there with us. We held our position, waiting for the Master Chief, when suddenly another Banshee appeared. Thomas grabbed the Jackhammer (a.k.a. "Spanker") rocket launcher, and nailed it. That brought a little bit of trouble. Elites in Ghosts and a swarm of grunts showed up. I jumped in the tank's gunner port, and shot down two ghosts with the main cannon. David nailed six grunts with two sniper shots (good, isn't he?) while Thomas, Al, Srg. Hawk and I took out the rest of the ground forces. We kept waiting, wondering if the Chief was dead, when he showed up. The Chief could man both the driving and the gunning of the tank because of his suit, so he was in the tank, while the rest of us hopped on. We drove on to the next partition, where another large force appeared. Roughly 20 grunts, 8 elites, three manned turrets, and two Covenant death tanks. The M.C. took out the tanks and ran over a bunch of guys, while the rest of us moppe up. We drove down a large corridor, and the Chief hopped out. "Stay there," he ordered. He activated a holo pannel, which opened a 25 meter high blast door blocking our way. We drove through the corridor, keeping constant vigilance. There was a chasm with enemies on our side and on the other side. There was one bridge between it. There were also two plasma turrets on either side of it. The Chief took them out with the main turret, while we marines concentrated on the little scum. David was in his element. He sniped three elites, ten grunts, and a hunter from across the bridge. We crossed, and met enemy fire. The chief ran over the other hunter, and just oblitterated the last group of enemies with the main cannon. We went through another long passage. We had several other skirmishes, until we got to a point where we couldn't drive the tank anymore. We hopped off, and ran through the obstacles. There were hoardes of enemies over the next ridge. The Master Chief had picked up a rocket launcher earlier, and took out turrets and aliens. We gave him backup so he could flank and surprise his targets. After what seemed like an eternity, we moved into the building. We had several other skirmishes, and we finally found the controll room. Or, I should say, the Master Chief found it. He ordered us to stay behind and wait for pickup. We were picked up 20 minutes later, and were taken back to H.Q. I had frostbite in my fingers, and the med techs fixed me up. It's rather cold, and it's my night for watch. I'll right mor tomorrow.

Journal of Private Salak, Robert A. 101 Hours After the landing of Halo December 1, 2889
Things are grim, journal. The Captain has been recaptured, and a team of Marines went into the strange structure where the Covenant took him, and never returned. The Master Chief was then inserted to find the Captain and what happened to the squad. He worked solo on this mission, and recovered a tape of some new kind of alien called the Flood. The flood are a parasitic race, preying on other species. The Chief found out that the Flood have taken over the bodies of the squad, mutating them into horrid monsters. There are many other infested soldiers in the installation. The Master Chief barely got out. Srg. Hawk, I, and the rest of my squad moved in to investigate, shotguns at the ready. Suddenly, Flood jumped us. They were everywhere. Then the Chief emerged from the structure. We moved through the swamp, to a tall structure. Then, an AI talked to the Chief, and he was gone. We were fighting for our lives. Thomas went down, as did Al, Johnny, and Sam. David, Srg. Hawk and I were the only survivors. If Echo 4-19 hadn't shown up soon, we'd just be corpses floating in the swamp. We re-located to the cave, where the last of the survivors were. There was about 17 left. They said they were forced to kill some unknown aliens, and then recognized the dogtags around their bloody necks. The men were shattered. I'm not sure how much longer we can hold out. We're low on ammo, low on food, and low on morale. I'm ready to die. I'm prepared. But I won't go without a fight.

Journal, I am crouched in the corridors of the Pillar of Autumn. I found the ship, and moved inside it by using a climbing line. The Covenant and the Flood were soon to move in after me. Neither species has found me. I am under the floor boards of an escape craft. I can't fly it out because I don't have the training. It is sound proof down here, so I can make this recording. I can hear them day and night. There have been a lot of skirmishes outside. I'm not sure if I can survive much longer. I am getting low on rations and water. What's that? >Clunk< >Clunk< >Clunk<
Readers! This man's fate is up to you! I am holding a vote until 9:00 tonight on his fate. Will he live and escape? Will the Covenant find him and kill him? Or will the Flood find him and give him a fate worse than death. I await your responses at tiger@louisiana.com
