Colonists war part 1:

THE COLONISTS WAR PART ONE:
"WE WON THIS WAR"
"I love the smell of a good clean deck and the sight of the deep briny black," said Captain Foress, inhaling deeply as he looked keenly into the inky blackness of space. The remnants of the mercenary fleet were drifting past now. Although once they had been menacing, a threat to humanity and to earth itself, the only thing left now of these gargantuan space pirates were these remnants of cruisers, silent flames feeding off isolated oxegyn bubbles.
Captain Foress smiled intensley and chuckled lightly to himself.
"It took a long, long, long struggle with these scum-bags, but I think it's safe to say...we won this war," he said, his teeth gleaming in comparison to his bushy greying beard.
Captain Foress was not the youngest or nimblest captain of the colonists fleet. In comparison almost, he was an aging fifty-five year old with a greying beard stubble and a similarly greying and balding head of hair.
Despite what the Captain looked like, all his men could safely say he was the best Captain to be seen since the start of the colonists war.
The colonists war had dragged on for many years. Well longer than the battle for the Ringworld and before it had started. The Colonist fleet, ever expanding in the hope of finding beleagured marines to assisst or a new world to colonise, had run into a nasty chain of mercenaries. These pirate raiders plundered from developing colony worlds and the frigate ships docked in their orbit.
The marines and regular infantry were fighting on Halo, so it was naturally the Colonist regular infantry and armour that chased the pirates back to whence they came.
After (it is estimated) twelve years of fleeting skirmishes oon colony worlds and ship to ship deadlocks in deep orbit did the UNSC colonial regular infantry and navy overpower the mercenaries, the finishing blow spearheaded by Captain Foress himself.
Now the mercenaries were through and the Captain, in search of more glory turned his sights on the planet that the mercenary fleet had been pouring off. The ships flew towards the target, a swirling planet of tangled jungle judging by its dense green exterior. However, as the fleet slowly rounded the dark side of the planet a terrible sight met the crews eyes.
Clustered around the dark side of the planet were more remains of the mercenary fleet and a small Covenant Armada. Like ghosts the ships hung around the dark side of the planet. Although small in size, the number of ships far outnumbered those of the colonists.
"Whoa..." muttered a crewman.
"Turn her around, that's why the mercenaries were coming off that planet. They weren't ATTACKING, they were RETREATING from those...those covenant bastards!" yelled the captain and the crewmen urgently began pressing buttons and cutting the ships engines. Captain Foress hurriedly contacted the rest of the fleet telling them to make emergency evasive manoevures.
Despite all this, the Covenant had spotted the mercenaries and were crawling through space towards the humans.
"One thing to do now, we've gotta get outta here!" yelled the second in command. The Captain was staring, dumbstruck at the approaching Covenant armada.
"No...no, it's far too late for that..." he murmered as plasma blasts began ricocheting towards them.
"Return fire! Prepare for boarding craft!" yelled a crewman in the distant noise of the bridge, but to the Captain everything was a mile away. He sat down, his ears deaf to the clammering of the gathered crewmen. Clutching his chest, he fell face-forward, his cheek hitting the thick glass of the bridge.
He had a massive heart-attack and died instantly.
In that second all activity on the bridge ceased. All eyes were fixed on the lifeless body of the Captain. And when that second passed, all hell broke loose.
The entire crew began screaming and shouting in terror as the ship caught flames and simeltaneously five other ships were crushed into shunks of flaming space junk.
After the screaming people began running like wild animals for the escape pods and lifeboats. Some did everything they could to get there faster. If that meant off with their shirts and boots and rifles, than so be it.
As the rest of the crew saw this advancing host of screaming crewmen and women, they too began panicking and fleeing as the ship pitched violently. This sent hundreds clattering up towards the cieling as the ship rocked viciously. Explosions errupted on the hull. The ship groaned as the gun batteries ruptured and detonated. Death lingered in the now quiet corridors of the ship, save the hissing of chemical fires.
The few that did escape the flames were a motley collection of crewmen and women, many burnt all lost their boots.
It was fifty or so of these panicking, frenzied beasts of men and women that made it out beisdes those bundled in three lifeboats who had escaped beforehand, an elite detachment of the UNSC fifth airborne division HellJumpers. These soldiers, bred on raw muscle and lean determination, the ones who exemplified mateship and true grit, would be the only survivors.
This was because there had been one colonist who had been the pride of UNSC colonists everywhere, and he was dead.
This was because there was one name the human race now feared beyond anything else, The Covenant.
They may have won a war, but they had just lost another.
