Betrayal and Re-Birth Part 1

The Unthinkable
by Griffin 3542
The Spartans. They were the warriors of humanity, modelled after the ferocius battle of Thermoplyae, where a tiny elite Spartan army held an army of a quarter million. Created by Dr Halsey, the surgically enhansed armoured goliaths were the best in the universe; cold, slick and professional. There were many tales of their heroism, their courage, their ability. Their struggle. The most famous of these and rightly so was the heroic actions of the last five Spartans, led by Master Chief John-117. But there were hundreds of Spartans after these originals, hundreds who tackled the titantic Covenant. The Office of Naval Intelligence never let the human race know about the other Spartans though; even the Spartans themselves were kept in the dark.
You will hear many tales of heroes overcoming great odds. These are indeed the mighty Spartans. But there is one detail, ony tiny tiny detail that nobody ever saw. The Spartans were named so because of Thermoplyae...but nobody went further then the combat. Because despite their heroic actions...the Spartans were defeated in a way they never understood. In a way they never believed possible.
They were betrayed.
Spartan 666, Sam, silently crept through the deserted halls of High Charity, in a place they seemed to call "Gemini". His stolen carbine at the ready, he patrolled the area with whiplash reactions, well aware of the parasitic flood undoubtedly hiding somewhere. Ever since the destroyer Iroquis had dropped out of Silpspace and pursued the unaware In Amber Clad, he and the rest of his 4 man team had smuggled aboard High Charity, intent on capturing a prophet. They had watched the small destroyer burn as plasma rippled through it, tearing the valiant vessel apart.
And now that the In Amber Clad had crashed, they and the accompanying AI Clara knew that they were trapped, through and through. Still, they had orders, and were going to follow them to the letter. No matter what.
The Spartans didn't really understand not being able to do a mission...but they were puzzled at how the hell they were supposed to capture a hostile leader, avoid eliminating him and his cohorts AND get him off this floating pin.
More then ever, Sam wished the Master Chief was here. Sarah-491 had been a leader and an inspiration to all of them. Unfortunately, she had died in a suicidal mission that ended up with the destruction of the 700-strong Covenant fleet at Earth
at the cost of her own life.
Small price to pay, but Sam still found himself bitter.
"Red Leader, I have contact. 4 Bruttes are engaging the Flood, but are heavily outnumbered. Request reinforcements, over."
Sam knew immediately that if Cailus-609 required assistance, then he was seriously underestimating "out-numbered".
"Red Team, converge at Red 3's position and stay alert. Blue team, report."
"We're almost at the objective Red Leader, but we have been forced to engage multiple Brutes. And with their damned honour guards, we'll need you guys."
"Understood. We'll be there as fast as possible; if Lindsey can use that beam rifle to help us, we'd appreciate it."
Without further ado, the 54 Spartans that were Red and Blue teams continued, without the slightest pause in this freakish place.
Thing was, they liked freaky.
Not too far away from High Charity, hidden in one of Halo's enormous islands, Spartan 491, Sarah, was prepping for her mission. Inside the gigantic Covenant super-fortress, she felt safe, despite the constant pitter-pat of Grunts, Jackals etc. Despite the simple clinical efficiency that the stylish Covenant weapons had, she couldn't help but wish she had a good old MA5B, or a battle rifle. Still, that wasn't an issue; the Elites spec ops never collected what they considered "primitive" human weapons.
Her mission, should she choose to accept it as Slipjaw had chuckled, was to infiltrate High Charity with an elite Covenant infiltration unit and extract many Minor Prophets and the newly ordained hard line Major Prophet Justice and reinforce the exhausted honour guards from their age-long siege with the Flood.
Sarah knew that a UNSC destroyer the In Amber Clad had attacked the Covenant forces on Halo, and then at the Library was overwhelmed by the Flood and brought into High Charity, the reason why the magnificent city was infested in the first place. She wasn't really concerned with the Marines; if they saw her and her pretty good looking purple armour, they'd automatically pause; more then enough time for Sarah and her special team of Elites to dispose of them. But there was one thing
one thing that in the back of mind, past all of the walls of iron steadfast will
there was a little voice whispering of the night. The night on Jacob IV where she had met John
and done something beyond her own comprehension. They had both immediately done their best to put the incident behind them, knowing full well how impossible it was for the two Master Chiefs to have a relationship other then simple mutual respect. Still, she had heard the reports, that John-117, the demonic destroyer of Alpha Halo was on High Charity. And even now, after all she had done against the human race
against their cause
she couldn't help but wonder if there was hope
Ju'Mahmee poked her, a slight smile on his pointed face.
"You ready old friend?"
Sarah simply smiled and donned her MJOLNIR armour.
"You bet."
