An Unngoy's Tale Part 1
Date: 4 February 2005, 8:25 AM
Seventh Cycle, Forty-nine Units, (Covenant Military Calender), Step of Obedience, Ninth Age of Reclamation, aboard abandoned Forerunner facility, orbiting Threshold.
As soon as he heard the radio calls of the Heretics being slaughtered by the Covenant SpecOps team, Takap the Unngoy knew the base was going to fall. They had been discovered.
Well aware that the Covenant soldiers would be moving towards the hanger and launch bays, the Unngoy moved towards the less used secondary hanger, where his personal Archangel was located. Being of an unusually high rank for one of his species, he was allowed free reign as the Sangheili rushed past wielding any weapons they could find. He was about to approach the hanger doors when, with a sickening jolt, the entire station was cut loose from the orbiting anchor and plummeted towards the giant storm on Threshold.
Takap keened in surprise and fear as he was jerked off his feat roughly, to land on the floor. Worse news awaited him; several Covenant troops rounded the corner and opened fire with plasma pistols and rifles. The superheated energy melted sizzling holes in the aeons old Forerunner metal. Takap ducked, weaved and dodged, activated the door controls and ran to the Archangel as fast as his small legs could take him.
Once inside, he quickly activated the secondary guns and rounded on the Covenant forces. Blue pulse lasers neatly cut through Unngoy and Sangheili alike. Nearby though, a Covenant Phantom was approaching the hanger bay. He would need to be fast.
The Archangel roared out of the launch bay at just under MACH 1, spun sideways and launched it's primary weapons at the Phantom. Twin tongues of plasma launched from his ship and gracefully curled towards the dropship. The slow, bulky Phantom tried to dodge, missed and fell towards Threshold in a ball of fire.
Eighth Cycle, Twenty-six Units, (Covenant Military Calender), Step of Obedience, Ninth Age of Reclamation, aboard Covenant Assault Cruiser Humility and Valour.
Although he was newly conscripted into the Covenant, the Sangheili named Koha 'Tamtumee was no fool. Top of his class at scanning and interpretation, he had been pulled onto the bridge crew of the Humility and Valour because of his excellent abilities. Many soldiers were needed in the Covenant's mission to locate both the Human homeworld and other Holy sites. The Humility and Valour was one of the ships that would escort High Charity to the Sacred Ring.
First though, 'Tamtumee had to scan for unusual contacts in the system. High Charity's safety was of the highest priority, and the Covenant had put their best fleets on it. Especially after what happened at the first Halo.
Koha initiated a passive scan, which would locate any radio signals or transponders in the immediate area. He filtered all the normal patrol beacons and came up with a contact. Tamtumee drew a quick breath, it was a single Unngoy Archangel, flying straight towards the Humility and Valour. He turned to the Sangheili standing on the bridge.
"Ship Master, we have an Unngoy Archangel flying towards the Valour. It is flying at speed away from the Holy facility. Should we hail it?" Ship Master Pula 'Wamamee examined the readout from the scan. The ship was flying almost despairingly. Whoever was flying that ship was a good pilot, worthy of a place in the Humility and Valour. "Yes." He finally answered. "Bring it aboard."
Aboard the Archangel, Takap was oblivious to the goings on of the bridge crew. His only concern was to reach a Covenant ship and blend in with the other pilots. If he was identified as a Heretic... he may as well have died. Takap was again checking his story when a Sangheili voice blasted through the wall-mounted speakers, booming with authority.
"This is 'Tamtumee of the Humility and Valour. Identify yourself." The diminutive alien started in surprise and reeled off his name and ship. "This is Takap on Archangel 12 flying off the Joyous Apostle" he answered, his throaty voice sounding nervous... as any Unngoy would be. Hopefully no-one on the Humility worked out that the former captain of the Joyous Apostle, Muda 'Onnomee had led the heresy as their Leader.
"Confirmed, Unngoy. We've received word that the Joyous Apostle has been missing for some time now. You were lucky to escape. The Ship Master has relocated you to the Humility and Valour for the time being" The Sangheili's words were edged with an emotion of some kind.... was it admiration?
Takap didn't know for sure but he was very glad that no-one knew of his brief involvement with the heresy. For now, he'd take what small things came to him, and be glad that he had food, water and methane.
Eleventh Cycle, Twelve Units (Covenant Military Calender), Step of Obedience, Ninth Age of Reclamation, aboard Covenant Assault Carrier "Humility and Valour" Unngoy pilot quarters.
Takap had been on the Humility and Valour for just over a human week when the order came out to move onto their next destination, Delta Halo. The Prophets, with their divine wisdom, had discovered the location of another Sacred Ring. That's what the Sangheili thought at any rate. Takap knew his brethren disliked the Sangheili for their strictness but he hated the Jiralhanae even more. They truly lived up to the human name of "Brute".
The Unngoy was gossipping with the other pilots when there was a flash outside the window and the vivid brightness of space was replaced by black. They were on course for Delta Halo.
Twelfth Cycle, Forty-three units (Covenant Military Calendar), Step of Knowledge, Ninth Age of Reclamation, aboard Covenant Assault Carrier "Humility and Valour"
Aboard the bridge, Fleet Master Faru 'Lamumee was making the final preparations to exit Slipspace and immediately launch reinforcements. They had received word shortly before going into Slipspace that the Noble Prophet of Regret's carrier had been attacked by the humans. The Demon was among them.
Although weary after an unfortunate encounter with some Kig-Yar, Takap was more than ready to fly his Archangel down, along with waves of Phantoms to assist Regret. You could hardly argue with a Field Commander.
Takap's fighter flew down, dodging the many Phantoms around. He was to provide cover fire for the ground troops while they rescued Regret. The Unngoy wondered why the Prophet of Truth had waited so long to send out the Phantoms, even when he knew Regret was in need of assistance. It was as though Truth didn't want Regret to be rescued at all.
The diminutive alien brushed away his thoughts and concentrated on the task at hand. He was about to drop down further into the ring's atmosphere when a fleet wide call went out, unusually it was from the Fleet Commander himself,
"All fighters and dropships, this is Lamumee. The Prophet of Regret has been lost. Retreat back to your capital ships. We are going to finish the Demon once and for all. He will pay for what he has done today."
